tl;dr:
Man goes to Iraq and some combination of stress and just getting older induces schizophrenia. He returns to the US and shows all the signs, even reporting himself as a dangerous, obviously delusional, person to the FBI. They do what they can, which is temporarily hold his gun and commit him to a mental hospital. Eventually they are legally obligated to return the gun to him, which he takes to Florida and kills 5 people with.


This wasn't really a case of the system breaking down. That's just how the system currently works.

depends on the offense, but most misdemeanors and even a single felony on your record can be overlooked if the military is hurting for applicants, as it was during the heavier fighting in the Middle East. they are more selective these days and less likely to grant waivers as the recruitment quotas are being hit with ease.

You currently have a zero % chance of getting in with any kind of felony (since last 5~ years). Certain misdemeanors will also automatically prevent you from joining, namely any kind of battery (domestic is auto-RIP due to Lautenberg amendment), while all others require waivers even if you weren't found guilty.

Not sure if you still can but some states give you some allow you some leeway in selecting how you are executed... and just a few years ago there actually was a guy who got his wish of execution by firing squad. Even threatened to sue. Definitely the way I'd go if it ever came to it
