Authorities say a shotgun-wielding 24-year-old man shot and killed one of two pit bulls attacking a woman and her horse along a trail in San Dimas Saturday.
The man, a San Dimas resident, fired some shots from his .22-caliber rifle into the pit bull, breaking the dog’s lock on the horse’s leg. That dog was killed.
So he had a shotgun and a .22 rifle or did he just have a rifle and people dubbed it a shotgun because that's what it looks like and it's the most applicable? Confused.

In doing some preliminary checking to see if I would put my foot in my mouth by cracking a world's-smallest-shotgun joke, I found this, so idk.

Fucking context-free grammars... Did the guy kill a pitbull and a horse, or were the two pitbulls attacking both a woman and the woman's horse?

English is a context-free grammar, and that means that both interpretations of the sentence are equally valid. I agree they meant that the pitbulls were attacking a woman and the woman's horse, but the sentence technically works for both meanings. In the textbook we used for Automata at my university, it described the problems inherent in CFGs by example: "The boy shot the bear with the rifle." Under the sentence, they drew a picture of a grizzly bear dressed in hunter's garb and holding a rifle. Still cracks me up to this day.

It'll probably be quite a while before the study comes out, but I look forward to real research replacing cherrypicked articles. Of course, we'd already have the research if the NRA hadn't lobbied to shut down the former gun violence research program when it produced an unfavorable study.

Alexandria, VA Officer tried to pull over a taxi cab for a hit-and-run and was shot (possibly by the driver). Driver sped off and crashed near the city and was arrested.

Taxi cab drivers are by far the worst professional drivers and quite possibly some of the most dangerous. Here in D.C., we have the D.C. Taxicab Comission who are usually retired police officers and some are armed. Had an investigator try to pull over one cab for a violation, reached in the window to grab the guys license and the dude rolled up the window on him and dragged him a couple blocks down the street. Found out later the cab driver didn't have a license, a fake identity and everything and went to jail under an assumed name. Never did identify him. Attempted Murder of a Law Enforcement Official got him 40 years.

2 Santa Cruz officers dead, suspect dead

    http://www.contracostatimes.com/brea...othes-officers

SANTA CRUZ -- The gunman who fatally shot two Santa Cruz police officers Tuesday was wearing body armor and had three handguns when he was killed, Santa Cruz County Sheriff Phil Wowak said Wednesday at a somber news conference in front of the city's Police Department.

Sgt. Loran "Butch" Baker and Detective Elizabeth Butler went to Jeremy Peter Goulet's home Tuesday investigating a previous misdemeanor sexual assault allegation and had no reason to suspect there was any overt danger, Wowak said. Instead they were shot and killed on the doorstep of Goulet's Branciforte Avenue home.

"They were just doing their jobs," Wowak said.
After the shooting Goulet took the weapons of the plain clothes police officers
and stole Baker's car, but with the heavy police response he couldn't leave the area and only made it as far as nearby Doyle Street when he encountered two or three teams of law enforcement officers from various agencies, Wowak said. The officers exchanged gunfire with Goulet. After he was killed, law enforcement discovered Goulet was wearing body armor. Wowak said there were Santa Cruz firefighters and residents in the area during the gun battle. At least one of the firefighters took a resident to the ground for safety.

Wowak said investigators now know what Baker and Butler did not know when they went to the home Tuesday: Goulet, who had an extensive criminal history, was distraught and intended to harm people and police."There is no doubting in anybody's mind that the officers who engaged Goulet stopped an imminent threat and neutralized that problem before it reached out and harmed others," Wowak said.

"People we have spoken to characterized his personality as being angry and being destructive in nature. He made specific comments about being unhappy in his life. They made us believe that he may be suicidal."

The Police Department is taking today off to mourn the first on-duty deaths in its 150-year history while California Highway Patrol and the Sheriff's Office are covering the city for the fewer than 100-sworn officers. The city's police force will be back on duty Thursday morning.
"The Santa Cruz Police Department can't help you until they themselves are helped," Wowak said.

Santa Cruz Mayor Hilary Bryant said: "We all share in the frustration, the anger, the concern and the grief."

    Switzerland, again:

    http://www.nytimes.com/2013/02/28/wo...tory.html?_r=0

GENEVA — At least three people were killed in a shooting at a Swiss factory on Wednesday, the police said, adding that the gunman was among the dead. The episode was the second mass shooting in Switzerland this year.

The shooting occurred at about 9 a.m. in the canteen of a Kronospan wood processing factory in the town of Menznau, about 14 miles west of Lucerne, the police said in a statement. A spokesman for the police in Lucerne said that the gunman was a 42-year-old employee of the factory, but he gave no further details. The police said that the gunman was among those dead but that he was not shot by the police.

Seven people were injured in the shooting, the police said. The helicopter rescue service RGA said it evacuated four seriously injured people to hospital, the Swiss news agency SDA reported.

Mass shootings are uncommon in Switzerland, but the shooting in Menznau was the second such episode in two months, and it could revive debate on gun control in Switzerland, where it is estimated that there are between two and three million guns in circulation among the country’s population of eight million people.

In January, a mentally ill man, armed with a hunting rifle and an early-20th-century army carbine, shot and killed three women and wounded two men in the southern Swiss village of Daillon. That shooting renewed calls for stricter gun controls, ranging from setting up a central registry of weapons to ending the tradition that allows people who perform military service to keep army-issue weapons at home.
