If the parents were worth their salt they would use this as a teaching moment
    1. So you are answering your own question then? Why ask if you already know its just gun nuts (its not) that think the school in this story is acting ridiculously.

    2. I might be misreading this. Do you mean Lesser things in a general sense? Or do you mean calling someone a name is less than eating poptart into a gunshaped mountain. If its the latter, I'm gonna have to disagree.

What kind of teaching moment is this for the parents? Don't eat your poptarts into shapes?

"Sometimes people with authority make shitty decisions, and you just have to dealwithit.gif" is what I'd teach my yet-to-exist children. I sure as shit wouldn't call every news outlet I could find.

I once got suspended for slamming a kid's head into a wall when he attacked me. This just shows that schools do suspend kids for things worse than pointing a pop tart at another kid.

Wanna try an experiment? Find the nearest cop.

    Call him a fat ass

Now find another cop and point something the shape of a gun at him.

    See what happens

Tried it....they both called me a dumbass and told me to get back to work.

edit: Wait...they are rent-a-cops for our warehouse complex and I know them personally....does that still count?

edit again: They both said it doesn't count since they were sitting right here reading the thread with me and neither one is fat....guess I'll have to make a trip to the police station.

This I can agree with. Although I don't fault them for calling them out on their stupidity.

Wut? Pointing something that could be mistaken as a gun at a cop can get you shot. But noone was mistaking the poptart for a gun, and noone there had a gun to shoot the kid if they somehow did think the poptart he just took out of his mouth was a real gun.

These are completely different situations lol.

This right here... except for having a kid, not a yet-to-exist kid.

I got suspended for 10 days for getting my head slammed into a locker, and punch in the face a few times, because i refused to fight back when someone attacked me. The kid even told them i not only didn't fight back, but i tried to walk away from it (he followed me for a minute long walk back to my locker). it didn't matter.

I was never suspended, always handled stuff outside of the hallways or the school.

    I didn't learn any lessons.

A lot of these (ridiculous) overreactions to seemingly simple or harmless acts is just a small portion of some kind of nationwide threat assessment of the human population.

There's two types of these "threat assessors". There's the highly trained and highly sophisticated assessors from Law Enforcement agencies like the FBI, Secret Service, etc. that research a persons past (usually without even contacting the individual) to determine if that person is a threat to people and to determine if Law Enforcement intervention is necessary. A variety of things can trigger this type of assessment such as purchasing an unusual amount of ordinance (outside of recreational shooting) and multiple different types of weapons when there is no history of purchasing stuff like that. Buy a gun here and there, can chalk it up to a hobby, a collector, etc. Buy a few dozen suddenly and randomly? Could be something. Stuff like threatening phone calls, text messages (big brother at work here) can start up an investigation. Suicidal intentions, especially with the intent to hurt others or being part of certain groups (New Age Neo-Nazi's, any of the hundreds of sleeper cells of any terrorist organization), manufacturing of firearms, explosives, even browser searches for certain schematics or topics (I know searching the Anarchy Cookbook can flag you) all can get you under investigation.

Usually agencies like the FBI or the Department of Homeland Security set the standards for these assessments. Someone (usually a Personal Protection Contractor or someone from the DHS) takes the guidelines and disseminates them to state, local, and municipalities (Law Enforcement) which in turn filter to school systems, organizations or local businesses. How many of you had to sit through a mandatory "Workplace Violence" seminar at your job? A lot of times those seminars are funded by the government as an ongoing massive threat assessment program to encourage people to report suspicious behavior.

Then you have the local or municipal threat assessment squads that include schools and organizations. Usually these squads are composed of a team which can include a Law Enforcement officer, administration for the company and their internal affairs bureau. A lot of times these people have little to no real experience in threat assessment and follow the guidelines set forth by whatever agency put them in place. A lot of it is up for interpretation and a lot of times people always say in these situations "better to be safe than sorry". So a precursor indicator for violence could be "Likes to talk about death" and the organization could take it one step further and say "Any action that could result in abnormal behavior i.e. an apparent death in the family where the person feels no remorse or grief for the deceased could be an indication of a fascination with death" (seen this before so can't make this shit up) could get a person flagged for investigation.

So while it seems kind of pointless for a lot of these incidents to get checked, especially involving a child as mostly they're innocent and not mature enough to understand intent and "wrong", it does somewhat curb behavior. Does it always work? No. The human factor always comes in to play here. Humans are unpredictable and free willed creatures. You can't always predict everything every human does at any given moment. Are we getting closer? Hell no. But does it provide results? Oh yeah. Look at shows like Criminal Minds. Yeah the characters and stories are fiction but the procedures (albeit a bit brief) are generally what agents do to profile killers and that shit really does work in the real world. Of course it takes months and even years for that stuff to happen but it does produce results and if it saves one life, it's worth it.

Just a side note though: even though the process may save lives in the end, for those who are innocent and just make a stupid mistake, sometimes stuff like this can ruin a persons life. Get investigated for making a poptart in to a gun-like object? That investigation might reveal it was innocent and harmless and the person isn't a threat, but that investigation never goes away. Somewhere it'll be on paper either in a case jacket at a LE agency or in your personal work history file that is carried with you for your whole life. One look at something like that can get you fired, can prevent you from getting a job, collecting government benefits, etc.

Tom Cruise we need you to make Minority Report real.

Also more Top Gun. Watched it 3 weeks in a row at work this month and could do it again. HIIIIIIGHWAY TO THE DANGERZONE.

I'd laugh if my kid was suspended for something so harmless. I remember for show and tell in kindergarten I brought in a toy rifle I had that was really loud.

Wonder how long it is before some kid ends up getting a psyche eval, suspension, and therapy for putting his fingers to his head and pretending to pull the trigger during a boring class.

I got a trip to the counselors office for writing a comedic essay on suicide. Wasnt even due to the teacher, was her stupid student aide logging grades into her book who told the counselors.

Had another incident where some students told the vp I was coming to school with my dad's gun and threatening to kill people. Thankfully the resource officer used to work under my dad . pissed me off though.

I'm really not surprised that it's coming to this. My fiance got sent to the principle's office in elementary school when she smacked her own forehead due to someone did something stupid. Her mom got called and was told that they were afraid that she was self abusing. Her mom reacted by smacking her own forehead.

The people in your sig are clearly self-abusive psychopaths with anger management/communication issues.

    tl;dr:
Two young kids (13-15) and ~10 tried to rob a woman who was walking around with her baby in a stroller. She didn't have any money, and she told them that so they shot her in the leg. Then they also shot the baby in the head. The baby died.

If she had a gun to defender herself with then we could have had two dead little wanna-be robbers instead of one dead baby. Nice! God, thanks gun control nuts. >:/
