How is he used to shooting it but shot his sister by accident? Besides the fact that a five year old shouldn't have a fucking rifle to begin with how do you gift a rifle and not teach the child how the most simple rule of guns - TREAT THEM LIKE THEY ARE ALWAYS LOADED?

Was more an issue of maturity/discipline than his age, I would have never tried to play with one of our weapons as a kid.

Goes without saying. My point was that I never went looking for it, and I went looking for everything. Also a fail on the parents part because there is literally zero times when I am unsure whether my weapon is loaded. By default they always are but I don't just forget to check if I intend for it to not be.

I grew up in a house with hunting rifles too. My dad "hid" then in a "secret" panel wall in the basement, but I knew where they were. I never fucked with them even once, never showed them to my friends because I knew not to, but still it was irresponsible for my parents to not have them under lock and key. They taught me and my siblings well and never had a problem, but we were still kids and should not have been trusted - and that's not to mention the suicide risk issue.

It's funny you mentioned the secret panel thing because I used to do the same thing before I started seeing how dangerous a firearm can be in the hands of a child. All of my guns are under lock and key now. I don't relax at home till my service piece is stored in my office safe. The two weapons I have that are "accessible" in an emergency are inside a quick release safe that uses a pin (changed every quarter or so and only myself and my wife know the combinations) and I possess the only key to it. The safe next to my bed is a fingerprint safe that only my wife and I are registered to and is the middle of the night emergency firearm cache'. Probably spent thousands of dollars on personal home defense and another couple thousand dollars making sure my personal home defense is safe from wandering fingers and curious little munchkins. Can't even imagine what parents go through when their child accidentally discharges a firearm.

Wow, if the video wasn't awesome enough what happened after is just fucking priceless.

Moments later the victim was approached by two black males in a black four door sedan (possibly a Honda Accord). The driver of the vehicle said to the victim "give me my gun back and I'll give you your phone that you dropped". The victim then used the shotgun to strike the rear windshield of the vehicle causing it to break. The two subjects then fled on Frenchmen to St. Claude and then unknown.

The company that makes the rifle, Milton, Pa.-based Keystone Sporting Arms, has a “Kids Corner” on its website with pictures of young boys and girls at shooting ranges and on bird and deer hunts. It says the company produced 60,000 Crickett and Chipmunk rifles for kids in 2008. The smaller rifles are sold with a mount to use at a shooting range.

Keystone also makes guns for adults, but most of its products are geared toward children, including books and bright orange vests and hats.

“The goal of KSA is to instill gun safety in the minds of youth shooters and encourage them to gain the knowledge and respect that hunting and shooting activities require and deserve,” the website said.

No one at the company answered the phone Wednesday.
