(CNN) -- A 5-year-old girl in New Orleans died Sunday after, police believe, she accidentally shot herself in the head.
The case will be reviewed by the district attorney's office and charges may be forthcoming, the New Orleans Police Department said in a statement.
Earlier, they had said that the girl's mother faced a charge of second-degree murder.
Officers responded to a report of a child shot late Sunday morning. They found the girl in a bedroom, suffering from a gunshot wound to the head. She was transferred to a hospital but later died from her injury.

"A preliminary investigation indicates the child was home alone and had somehow come into contact with a .38-caliber revolver and accidentally shot herself in the head," police said in their statement.
They said the mother told them she locked her daughter in the home while she went to the store. Upon her return, she found the girl in the bedroom with the gunshot wound.
The gun was recovered.
Police have not released the girl's name, pending notification of family members.
An autopsy is scheduled for Monday morning.

(CNN) -- The gunshot wounds to two Ohio boys found dead in their grandparents' home are consistent with a homicide-suicide, a coroner said Friday.
The two boys, who were half-brothers, were found Wednesday in Jackson, Ohio, about 75 miles south of Columbus. They were identified as Austin Wiseman, 12, and Blake Campbell, 9.
Both boys suffered gunshot wounds to the head.

The nature of the wounds and the bullets in their bodies indicated that the killings were a homicide-suicide, but it is not known whether they were accidental or intentional, said Dr. Gregory Hawker, the Jackson County coroner.
"We can't tell -- we might not ever know," he said.
Family and friends have suggested that the older boy accidentally shot his younger brother and then was overcome with grief and turned the gun on himself, but there is no way to prove that forensically.
"Authorities have taken the older boy's computer to make sure there's no indication of ill intent," Hawker said. The older boy had become obsessed with guns in the last few weeks, he said.
The boys lived with their grandparents and were unsupervised when the shooting happened, he said.
The shooting occurred in an upstairs bedroom.
"That's crazy to think two young boys are dead, and no one knows anything about it," neighbor Michael Hatley told CNN affiliate WSAZ.

How would they prove the kid's intention unless he like tore shit up to get at his little brother?

And even then, it could very well be little kids playing gone wrong. I remember being chased around a friend's house by his little brother shooting at us with a bb gun, it's not hard at all to picture a little kid thinking he was playing around with an unloaded gun and shooting his brother on accident in a way that looks intentional.

Forensics cannot prove intent but it sure as hell can prove what happened (reasonably).

I'll be talking to the LGS in town about the weapon since he does quite a bit of business with NFA items. ND story sounds like a lot of bullshit too.
