Looks like 12 dead, more wounded. One shooter killed by swat, two more suspects sought.

And of course people have to be stupid as much as possible. A local professor is being blasted for tweeting about it. Folks are calling for his dismissal, saying that he's encouraging the killing of children. Read his tweet and make up your own mind, but it reads pretty simply to me (read: doesn't look like it at all):

    http://www.kctv5.com/story/23480333/...navy-shootings

    LAWRENCE, KS (KCTV) -
A journalism professor at the University of Kansas is under fire for his tweets about the National Rifle Association following the mass shooting at the Navy Yard in Washington, DC.

The Kansas State Rifle Association is calling for David Guth's dismissal.

University officials said Guth's tweets do not reflect the views of the university.

On Sept. 16, Guth tweeted, "#NavyYardShooting The blood is on the hands of the NRA. Next time, let it be YOUR sons and daughters. Shame on you. May God damn you."
My Facebook is exploding with people saying he's wishing for the death of children.

I seriously am contemplating not wanting to live on this planet anymore. I just don't have words for this.

Three year old was shot in the head during a suspected gang related shooting in a park in Chicago. 12 other people were shot in the same shooting too.

I don't think there is anything that can be done for Chicago's residential districts at this point. No amount of social reform will save the dependency on crime to survive there. I don't think.

the whole milwaukee/chicago area is just awful. even the kids who do "well" are under-educated, because the schools are shit. my dad's university is having to do more and more high-school level courses just to get them caught up to where they should be.

the suburbs are disgustingly white, though.

Yeah south side is completely fucked. They've put in a lot of work, taken literally thousands of guns(something like 5k) off the streets in the last 12 months, and there's still minimum 10 shootings each week.

    1) That's because poorly run/corrupt city government bankrupted CPS and there's not enough money to properly staff teachers without basically saying 'whoops lol' to all of the previous ones that are owed pensions.

    2) Not as white as you think, suburbs here have extremely large Japanese/Filipino/Indian populations. I went to high school in a mid-income suburb neighboring several high-income ones and my school was like 40% white at best.

demographics vary dramatically and change very suddenly. Evanston is 60% white, wilmette next door is 90%

Doing ok, just got home. I was actually on the way home when the emergency tones went out on citywide on my portable. Met up with a buddy of mine that wasn't too far away from me and we suited up with jump gear and went in. Wasn't the first team in but went in just after the Park Police officer killed the guy. Was crazy because the entire base mobilized and you had active duty security forces mixed with DCMPD, Park Police, Secret Service, ATF, FBI, and everyone who had a badge and a gun within 10 miles scouring the compound and securing the perimeter. Thank god they were able to kill the guy before he was able to bunker down cause he had a lot of shit with him.

Just got out of intel debrief and headcount. Was a crazy week!

It still is pretty crazy. Right now they have a DCMPD officer stationed with the Navy Yard Police 24/7.

There was a lot of things that went bad there but the serious flaw was the (almost non-existent) security at the gates and check-in procedures that are (at best) better suited for a librarian than a military installation. The police there aren't military and are equipped like most private security agencies with a handgun and crappy radio's. Their cars were taken from them due to budget cuts so they get around with golf carts or on foot. There were reports of some of their security forces on the other side of the base running on foot to get to the shooter and most of them couldn't use their radio's inside the building, so communications for their force never was able to fully establish a log of the incident.

Someone on the first ERT team lapsed the entire incident at 12 minutes from start to finish and only two of the base police officers were able to actively engage the subject. One MPD Officer was able to engage and got shot (first on scene).

Kenyan shit is crazy. Also why can't we prohibit people that are mentally unstable from owning weapons yet? Why is this such a huge deal? I used to work with people who were mentally challenged and I was uncomfortable with them having a fucking broom and dustpan let alone a gun or butter knife lol.

"Oh you hear voices? Well dis is Merica so what type of ammo are dem voices telling you to purchase?"

They have to be adjudicated by a court to be mentally defective. This involves due process which isn't popular lately. Then whichever jurisdiction which finds them mentally defective has to learn how to share this info.
Everyone on both sides of the gun control issue agrees with keeping guns out of the hands of schizos, it is the taking of anyone rights without due process and lack of a path to recovery of rights that gets emotions heated.

I just don't understand how he wasn't charged with shooting out the tires of a truck OR shooting into his ceiling because his upstairs neighbor was being loud.

How do you just slide on that shit?

A lot of people say that the current system that's in place is adequate to prevent it from happening, it's the laws and loopholes in the system that prevents the sharing of information that is the problem. We were having this discussion the other day and one of the guys shared this scenario:

For every law that's made to prevent someone from getting a gun through a thorough background check, there's another law out there that has nothing to do with the issue of gun control that prevents that measure from being enacted. A typical NCIC query may show past history of criminal behavior but might not show that the person takes prescription medication because of depression or anxiety issues or has been diagnosed with PTSD. Why? Because there's laws that prevent the sharing of sensitive and private medical information with anyone without the express consent of the individual, especially to the government (in this case, Law Enforcement). It's not until something happens that you find out that said person had a history of mental illness because now it's not sensitive information, it's information revealed through the investigation that's subject to the Freedom of Information Act. In a perfect world, you register in a database when you're diagnosed with a mental illness that prevents you from owning or operating a gun. Who here would like to be the first to register themselves in the database?

It's too big to even comprehend the amount of legislation and discussion that must go in to trying to balance and fine tune a universal system that doesn't infringe upon an individuals freedom, while keeping everyone safe and upholding the rights of citizens.
