fucking hell, shouldn't be allowed to own a handgun in the US unless your law enforcement, or mlitary or you served honorably in the military. No high capacity magazines either, 5 rounds is all you need for hunting or practice shooting. I've seen both sides, living in europe now, and I love my guns, but america needs to do something. If ya'll have never been to smith mountain lake, or bridgewater, you should still go. It's a great place, lots of good fishin, and nice modern southern atmosphere when your just trying to relax.

fuck i don't even know what to say about all this... i miss home

Unless the NRA gets banned, will never happen due to the second amendment. For every politician willing to stand up to the NRA there's 5 others who say we want your money, tell us what you want us to say.

This story just gets worse and worse. Cameraman's girlfriend was a morning show producer and saw it happen live. Today was her last day at the station and they were about to move together to Charlotte. Christ.

I actually have no problem with people owning guns. However, something seriously needs to be done in the form of gun control so that people like this, or the VA massacre, Sandy Hook, or the multiple movie theater killings doesn't happen again. Of course it's not going to stop everyone, but it can at least severely curb the tide and the flow of guns into the country.

I get pretty irked every time a conservative (or a conservative wanna be) explains killings away as being done by a deranged, crazy or disgruntled employee or person. What more is that they never have a solution to their version of the problem as well, only empty rhetoric. The reality is that this nation cannot institutionalize every single person with some perceived form of mental illness, so the next best thing is to at least make it exceptionally difficult to obtain a weapon by legal means and double or triple up on illegal gun trade.

ignoring the pleas to not make this dude a martyr and blast the media with his history/etc...

Playing that clip of him reporting on things (that's him right?) really makes him out to be "one of us" and gets away from the sad excuse that the gunman is always deranged, crazy, disgruntled, etc.

Could be a stronger angle to take vs gun control than has been taken before since the pictures of the shooters were always kind of crazy looking (thinking the movie theater shooting & sandy hook)

In a way they are right. You have to be pretty fucked in the head to kill someone, especially a room full of kindergartners or a reporter with her back turned. The thing is people snap for different reasons. And until they snap and do this, so long as they meet all the background check requirements, they can get a gun. And even with background checks, it's not fool proof. Then you have all the stolen guns on the street that if you know the right people to ask, who can hook you up regardless.

I myself am all for people having guns, though I do think things need to be changed. I'd be all for mandatory gun safety classes with yearly or bi yearly certifications. Mandatory gun safety classes, restrictions on rifles, etc as so many people don't follow basic safety steps. It's why you see so many toddlers accidentally killing someone when they find an unsecured loaded gun. My brothers last birthday, between him and two friends, we easily had about 10 guns and rifles and enough ammo to survive a few months in case of zombie apocalypse. Before we went to bed, we spent a good 30 minutes trigger and clip locking every gun just due to the .00001% chance one of his friends son's who was staying the night would wander into my brothers bedroom, rifle through the closet, open up a gun bag and pull something out.

Main reason I don't have a gun right now is I rent an apartment, so I can't bolt a gun safe to the floor. I want to make sure that if someone breaks in, there is no way they are getting to them and use them to kill someone else.

Bleh, sorry for the rant. Kind of went off on a safety tangent, and gun safety is one of those things that never gets discussed when you have a murder/accidental shooting.

In America at least, the genie is out of the bottle when it comes to guns. There is no going back or a reset button to press. If you want to get Civil War 2 started, forcibly removing guns from citizens is the best way to start it.

You don't have to have armed troops marching up and down the streets taking away guns. All you need to do is enact safe surrender policies for weapons, and after a year or so make it illegal to own one. If you're found in possession of a weapon during a legal search, your ass goes to jail. The people who really love guns, and use them responsibly, will be on the exact same footing as people who love drugs and use them responsibly.

And again, so long as the second amendment is around, that will never happen. And so long as the NRA among other gun lobby's are around, that amendment will NEVER get repealed. Hell even without the lobby's, especially with the southern states, the odds of the 2nd amendment being repealed are probably lower than all of BG hitting the lottery.

I agree, which was why my post was right across the entire board when it comes to gun control. It just needs to be more difficult in general to obtain and maintain having a gun. Stricter background checks and even mental health checks if no real one exists. Safety checks should work in tandem as well, I agree with as well.

That video of him doing interviews and reporting was his resume demo that he's sent to a number of newscasters, including CNN. There's really no ill intent or tell in the video, despite the very first clip being that in a gun store. Killers come in all forms, and can't be readily identified, as Melena has mentioned a post below yours. some people are just normal people who snap and go into kill mode with no prompt at all.

Mental checks in a way do exist, though the ACLU along with the NRA are trying to restrict it for different reasons. If you are committed, it is supposed to show on a background check. Of course the easy way around this is to go to a gun show. No background checks there to buy/sell. Deputy I know through my dad regularly drives about 300 miles once a year to a major gun show in reno in part due to ammo restrictions and pricing in california.

Just look back at some of the posts, especially Blub. Anything that restricts guns to active military/law enforcement means the 2nd amendment would have to be removed or amended.

    http://open.nysenate.gov/legislation/bill/S2230-2013

At least in New York due to the mental hygeine part of this bill people can be restricted from gun ownership due solely to anxiety, which is something that 25% of women and 15% of men in the US currently take medication for. Gun shows are a loophole that need to be closed definitely. If a person really wants to kill though there is no way anyone can stop them unless we have a thoughtcrime division of psychics pop up. Short of a gun ban I don't think these 2 deaths could have been stopped, and he might have just machete'd them instead anyway.

Wow, didn't even know about that one. Though New York has I believe, the strictest gun control laws in the country.

I highly doubt it would "make things worse" if it was abolished.

We don't fight wars with militias anymore, and even our extremely well armed populace is not a useful check against our ridiculously powerful military. Owning guns puts you at a greater risk of gun death than the risk it prevents by being able to use them against intruders.

So basically it's down to "muh freedoms" vs. lots of murder and suicide.
