It's your assertion that people who hunt with handguns are douchebags, despite the fact that there are numerous ways to not one-hit-kill an animal while on the hunt. And it's a flimsy reason to ban handguns, just based on their uses during hunting.

There may be several reasons to ban handguns, but their use for hunting is not one of them.

I'm not saying we should ban handguns, or heavily regulate them, because of how they are used in hunting.

I'm saying we should heavily regulate handguns (and leave rifles and shotguns alone) because they do the vast vast bulk of the killing, and we shouldn't listen the bastard children of the hunting world (handgun hunters) when they cry about heavy regulations stripping their ability to hunt.

How does that contradict anything I just said? We're in agreement that it's hard to drop an animal in its tracks with a bow, especially compared to a hunting rifle.

You made declarations about handgun hunting but advocated bow hunting, which met all of your incorrect reasons of why people shouldn't hunt with handguns. We disagree on that a handgun doesn't have the same ability to kill as a rifle.

I know lots of people who take handguns with them to hunt even if they are not specifically using it to hunt. Mostly they carry it to use against something they might come upon unexpectedly like a rattlesnake, wild boar, bobcat, bear, etc.

If you really want to carve out an exception to my imaginary heavy regulations for long-barrelled revolvers and long-barrelled single-shot pistols, I guess, but douchebags hunt with non-specialty handguns as well so they'd still cry about it, it seems easier to just lump them all together and ignore their whining.

Depends. BFR can get a reported 2" group at 50 yards, more than enough to take game.

Would this be federally funded or privately funded? What regulatory body would ensure the proper training? Just an aside there are laws requiring gun locks be sold with every firearm.

Would the mental health check by-pass the privacy laws? I have not worked for NICS to see what they see, but I think for mental health checks only rely on self reporting on the form 4473.

State level funding. In fact, it could be very similar to the DMV for the purposes of licensing and training (with a Department being created in each state).

I don't even think that the NICS is a system capable of being able to report on the mentally ill accurately at all -- self reporting is a pretty flawed process and has left so many gaps in information reporting over the years since 1998. States aren't even required by law to submit mental health records to NICS if they don't want to -- there's also no consequences for a state not reporting it. In my own opinion, NICS should be completely gutted out and replaced by a newer, more modern system as well.

Personal opinion, but the hypothetical mental health checks would definitely have to bypass privacy laws. Essentially it (should be) is a matter of national security.
