Worst FF Main Character ever

Yeah... never understood why people liked Kain as he was a massive douche. I think they just like Dragoons and he was the first, and one of the only, characters that represented the class in it's most iconic form. The rest of the series' Dragoons are somewhat ambiguous (Fang/Cid)... or just half-rat.

I think many gamers back in the day (myself included) liked Kain because he was pretty angsty/emo/whatever, like the conversation we had in the thread about Squall. I think it depends on your age, personality, etc. when you are first introduced to the character.

I also just really liked Kain's sprites, I thought Paladin Cecil looked much less cool than Kain or Dark Knight Cecil.

There's a few reasons, speaking from myself:

1) Sprite. His battle sprite is legendary. Blue spiked armor, red fucking eyes, badass jump sprite and sound.

2) Dragoon concept is pretty boss. Fights dragons and doesn't give a fuck.

3) Even through the original NA translation, he was one of the only characters in the entire game to not be completely one-dimensional. Despite being mind-controlled, he didn't mind every aspect of it because he wanted to be near Rosa. Despite being a good guy at heart, he still wrestled with feeling of inferiority and resentment of the main character. When you start getting into re-translations and future versions of the game, you find out that he still doesn't really "like" Cecil towards the end of the game as much as he feels obligated to him, whereas he was a good friend and rival to him pre-game, albeit with the established jealousy. You also have the discovery that he was struggling to resist being mind-controlled by Zemus during the final trek through the dungeon, which just makes fighting with him feel that much more badass, imagining him losing it and turning on them.

4) Fucking badass sprite. Bears repeating again. Even Bartz's FFV Dragoon sprite pales in comparison. FFV's Dragoons didn't look as good with their pure vertical animation. FFVI's Dragoon Boots was the same (laaaaame). The rest of the Dragoons either didn't have the armor or the combination of look + ability, even if Kain took hits like a chump compared to Cecil.
