Not true. He does, in a very subtle way. A bit too subtle, to the point many players (understandably) completely miss it.
Without going into detail, he's the main reason Ashe goes from a self-absorbed bitch obsessed with revenge to a respectable leader who realizes her living subjects deserve more attention than avenging the dead ones.
But that's exactly the problem with him: Ashe is the lead, he's a supporting character. Is that problem big enough to be considered the worst FF main character? Not for me.
The problem is the bad writing more than Vaan himself.
His contributions to the story become a lot more obvious when you replay the game (especially the scene in Raithwall's tomb where he has a vision like Ashe, implying that he was supposed to be the Occuria's backup plan).

So the main character is the backup plan that never gets used? Thats pretty shitty don't you think?

And he helps a character overcome their bad side and become a good leader? Sounds like a great supporting character role don't you think? Ashe being the main character and Vaan being a side character would've made far more sense if you wanna talk about the few little things he contributed.

For me it's Cloud, Squall, Tidius, and Vaan.

Cloud and Squall for being emotionless and uninteresting. Zidane was a fresh breath of air after these 2.

Tidius for being annoying with the whole "I hate you, Dad!" shit.

Vaan for not being interesting at all. That and his abs still creep me the hell out.

If I had to choose one it'd be for Cloud for the above reasons and the drooling, idiotic fanbase that follows him.

I don't really get the whole Squall emo thing, considering what you find out in FF8. How do you expect someone in his situation to act in the beginning(especially considering he had character progression and Rinoa was really the unlikable one in that game) especially consider the whole, you know, MEMORY LOSS thing cause of GFs. He's going to school with people he's known since childhood but he doesn't remember them at all, and the one person who cared for all of them became a sorceress, due to the fact that the one he defeats LATER in the game ends up going back in time before her death and gives her the powers. And the one girl he's somewhat interested in starts off fangirling over Seifer, who is a giant douche and ends up merely settling to serve others rather than walk on his own 2 feet like Squall does eventually.

Edit: And on top of all that, there's of course the theory going around about everything after Disc 1 being not real and him seeing it flash before his eyes as he's dying due to a giant icicle in his chest. And he starts the game off getting a scar on his face in a spar cause Seifer is a dick. He doesn't have any realistic time to hit Zidane or Tidus levels of happiness.

Was just about to post something similar to this. Squall had very legit reasons for acting the way he did and made some very serious strides as far as character progression goes, whereas characters like Tidus, Vaan and Lightning (I'd even argue Cloud as well) made none.

Except they scripted it so once you understand all the shit that went down to make him that way, you don't find him annoying, unlikeable and unrelatable. Which is a perfectly fine way of setting up character progression and is used regularly in movies/tv shows and other media.

If I have to vote, Vaan gets the choice. I hated that he was put into the game solely because he had to be the token bishounen, pretty boy because Japan always needs at least one. People might have problems with the other characters and their attitudes throughout the game, but at least they were a part of the game's narrative.
