Maybe it's just me, but I found this part of the story just... well shitty, so maybe that's why I never understood Squall.

Honestly, I think the only reason I managed to make it through FF8 was by farming the 2 islands for awhile to max out my magic then steamroll through the rest of the game.

I'm surprised Zidane got any votes at all.

I get the Squall hate, but aside from the Rinoa thing I generally liked him as a main character. Hard to forget he's..17. But I guess that's like 35 by JRPG standards. I just like his reaction to the happy go lucky people (doesn't he actually facepalm at one point?).

Plus (I know we're not counting them) the spin offs make Squall pretty cool.

..By contrast, they make Cecil and Firion annoying as hell (seriously. Play Dissidia).

Cecil.. yeah, guy kinda failed at a lot of things, but still ends up being king at the end.

The guy had multiple personalities, you go for a fucking magical Freudian journey through his subconscious toward the end of the game. He's literally an entirely different person. Also anyone that refers to him as emo needs to go back and play FF7 again and stop acting like Advent Children and Dissidia accurately reflect his original character in the least.

Exactly why I voted for Squall instead of Tidus. Fuck I hate emo.

Cloud's emo was more of a "fuck off" style of emo that didn't bother me too much, Squall can eat a pile of herpes dicks.

And even once you know the reasons for his behaviour, you still hate him because he really was that much of an unlikeable, emo, asshole. Sure, he softens up and such but he spends at least 3/4 of the game being unlikeable, and knowing why he's an asshole doesn't erase the fact he is actually an asshole.

I don't get the hate for Lightning, I thought she was pretty cool by the end of it all. Even little bitch boy Hope had excellent character development by the end of that game.

Lightning and Squall are similar in that they spend the first parts of their games being dickheads who later learn how to have friends and be nice. Lightning is better because she spends less time being an asshole, and also because each chapter focused on different characters so you aren't overexposed like you were with Squall. There's also the fact that Lightning was able to convey her feelings better and by 3/4 of the game you could tell she really liked her party and wanted to help them out, even though Squall was similar it was always internal vocalisation which isn't very interesting from a group dynamic standpoint.

I voted Tidus and Vaan, though I don't really hate Vaan(mostly I was just wondering why I was stuck running around as a support character the whole game), but holy shit did I hate Tidus sooooooooooooo much. Unfortunately I've never even touched FF13 and barely played FF2 so I can't really say anything about their characters(i also only played like half of FF4 so I can't say much on that either). If I did replace my vote for Vaan with anyone else it would probably be Cloud.

Also, very surprised Squall doesn't have more votes even though I personally liked him.

I agree completely. I'll never forget going to Circuit City to buy some games and I figured I'd give the the display PS2 a whirl that had FFX on it.

I voted for Tidus, as mentioned, but I wonder if Vaan gets so much hate because FFXII was basically the last time people had faith that an FF game stood a good chance of being awesome? It was for me, anyway.

FFVI doesn't even really have a main character even though you start with Terra. Squall and Tidus easily for me. Vaan a solid third.
