I've gotta agree with this too.

He may have been a moody bitch early on (but to be fair, who wouldnt be when your friend just sliced your face off and you have to deal with that retard Zell following you around)... but he was all about helping the team and being a decent dude for a decent portion of the game. Never mind the fact that he was a total bad ass throughout every mission he gets sent on.

Yup. Then gets an icicle in his chest for his troubles. It showed that he was able to think on his feet and work under improvised conditions, even though things didn't pan out as they'd desired. One of my favorite scenes in the game.

Exactly, unlike most leader characters... Squall actually seemed like a natural-born leader even if he didn't want to be. I really enjoyed that about him.

By the way, the screwed up assassination attempt was justified. Irvine knows it's the matron (their mother, basically) he's about to headshot. He didn't use GF, his memory was retained.

Squall saving Zell at the beginning was Disk 2 was pretty good too. He jumped from X floor down X floors and one shot a soldier!

Also, I liked FF8 showing Squall's internal thoughts. It was actually quite funny and was quite entertaining to see (or read) how he is feeling.

I suppose overall Zidane would earn my vote, I don't recall anything badassery to come out of him. He didn't have a big sword either (although i think endgame his daggers were rather big?; not that the sword should make or break a character's badassery, but in general FF9 was pretty tame and self enclosed to be not too controversial... if we talked about support chars I suppose Quina and Amarant stands out). And i dislike monkey like characters.

Main reason people hate Squall is because he's not Cloud. Plain and simple. Nostalgia goggle hate on FFVIII is terrible.

EHHHHHH wrong. Most of us here have Nostalgia goggles for VI not VII. VIII was just a shitty game.

I liked Zidane. FF9 is one of my favorite games though.

I feel like zidane had a lot more personality than Cloud or Squall. Yes, they fleshed out and all that crap but Zidane was so much more relaxed and go with the flow about everything. I remember getting to one of the last dungeons and Zidane figures out he's just a clone thing or he was created by Garland and he's just NOT himself. All depressed and in disbelief about his existence. It was a pretty emotional scene for me.

I think the only "main" character that was absolutely moot was Vaan. Served 0 purpose. I think all the other leads were pretty spot-on/realistic to be in that role

Oh god yes. That moment...I went in not knowing...jaw was dropped when I saw him coming out, then shouting profanities as soon as it didn't pan out like I thought it was.
