I found all the FF games, even past the 'nostalgic' ones, to be fun. O_o They have interesting stories and characters, challenging enough gameplay and bosses, nice graphics, and enough content to keep me busy for a while (even if that content is grindy, that's kind of the lot in life of RPGs though). I think some people are just WAY too picky and elitist about what makes a game good/fun.

Now if you're talking about the potential a game has vs how it was actually released that's different, but it's very hard to reach something's true potential, you have to have a really good/dedicated staff who has all their shit together and I don't think SE has had that in a long time.

But you don't get to lay down the criteria for what makes something fun for everyone.
You can love the game play, doesn't make it any less basic compared to the majority of games released now. I'm not saying I didn't like these games (maybe you missed the part where I said I love these games, but that's OK, ignore that), I'm saying the difference between game play pre-2003 is the same as post-2003. Which means a lot of the games before had fun game play and a lot after had fun game play. You might like the ATB system, but if you can't see it for what it is compared to games that actually tried to be fun (and have good stories) then I can't help you. After FF6 there was very little reason for the game play to remain so goddamn static.

Maybe you think story is important to game play. It isn't. A good story doesn't make physically playing the game better, just like a bad story doesn't make a game any less fun. Why? Because story isn't game play.

Also, I never claimed my opinion as fact. If you think that's the case then you're being oversensitive.

While I agree that most FF game play isn't top notch, FF has never really been about game play to me. Its always been about story and characters. Not to mention you listing FF11 as bad and XII as good, when XIIs gameplay was just offline XI is just lol.
    nice try trolling lol.
Err, TWD is amazing but it isn't exactly a fun game. Story adds to atmosphere sure, but when I 'play' TWD I don't expect to do anything but enjoy the story. You people seem to think that story and atmosphere actually count for game play mechanics, when really they just add to the overall experience. Maybe saying FF1-11 aren't fun is harsh, they're nice games but more accurately their game play is poop. I love them for the story but if they actually had good game play they would be amazing.

Also, differing opinions != trolling, people love throwing that word out like they know what it means. And lol @ XI game play being the same as XII, you must've been paying so much attention.

I personally play RPG for story. For me RPG is like a living book. You see the story instead of just reading it. Gameplay comes 2nd. I will always priorize a RPG which seems to have a potential good story then a RPG with OMG gameplay.

Some people will prefer old FF and some will like new FF (that is a fact)
Quote me saying stuff as a fact. I didn't realise I had to preface all my posts with IMO because people are too stupid to realise that this is infact opinion. You may like story over game play, that's fine. You may love old school FF, that's fine too. I love 4, 6, 9 more than I should, but that doesn't stop me saying that the game play just isn't fun. I sit down to play these games and all I want to do is skip the middle man and just enjoy the story because the game play is ass. I loved Lost Odyssey which has the most basic game play I've seen released recently.

Though sad day when game play comes second. I always thought the point of a game was to play a game. Apparently people like interactive story books. If the game play is boring, then it's boring. You can also love something despite it being bad. Did people just forget that?

Re: Square Enix Asks: What do you want in 2013?

I would've never gotten through the last Star Ocean if their battle system wasn't always on point and constantly delivered characters with badass abilities. In hindsight, it probably counts for all of them because the story was never that great imo and SO2 was probably their best Star Ocean. So I agree with Elcura in that regard.

This is why I cringe at people who wanna go back to boring-assed turn-based gameplay when its been proven that more dynamic and exciting battle systems are possible.

On Tapatalks so ill stop here for now.

That IS your opinion being stated as fact. Because you are trying to establish rules for what makes something fun. Like I said before, you don't get to dictate what is fun for everyone.

And before you complain, I didn't quote the rest of your post because I don't have any issues with the rest of your comments. I get that you like the old systems and the new ones. So do I. It's just I don't put the fun factor purely into the gameplay and neither do a lot of other people and that is a subjective matter.

Apparently a games worth is dictated by its game play alone. Even if the game play has been static for the better part of two decades, the story and atmosphere always makes up for it making it a fun game. Of course, every one has exceptions, but for the most part this is true.

Yeah I get it, you think story is important to overall fun, I don't. If that isn't opinion vs opinion, then this isn't the internet and this isn't an internet argument.

Primarily, a game's worth IS dictated by the game play. I mean, what's the point of playing a game if game play isn't what you're looking for? Like I said, go read a book. We play games to play, not listen to teenagers whine about how hard it is to be alive.

I don't buy an RPG thinking, "Gosh, I hope the story in this is good enough to make up for the lack of interesting game play!" Actually that's a lie, I bought Lost Odyssey for that reason. What can I say, I'm not perfect.

Also I doubt it'd happen, but I'd like a platformer/ARPG hybrid like how Ys Origin/Ys Oath in Felghana were.

I'll say this, gameplay is an important part of why I buy a game...but story is the most important part to me. I want to be immersed, I want to be surprised, and I want to not feel like my intelligence is being insulted. I like Skyrim, but if it had a better story I would love it and spent much more time on it. Similarly, I love the Mass Effect series and hate playing shooters, but I bought all 3 games and spent hundreds of hours playing them. The gameplay actually annoyed me in most of the ME series because I dislike shooters, but I suffered through it for the excellent story.(-5 minutes) I hope SE does step up their gameplay, but you have to be careful there because if that's your focus and you overlook the story you'll end up Dragon Age 2 instead of Mass Effect 2.

95% focus on MMOs. Only blind people who throw their money at any product SE releases care about bicycles over cars.

That's over half the Japanese RPGs over the last 15 years. That's pretty troubling.

I don't know, sometimes there's this odd urge to play these types of games because they're familiar.

It's a comfortable thing to sit down with a recycled/rehash-system JRPG just to essentially have "more of the same."

When SE changes the battle system, people bitch. No matter what they change it to, people bitch.

"Mashing X is boring and turn-based combat is stupid"

FF12 gets rid of both those things

    Then, predictably,

"The game plays itself waah waah how come the battle system sucks so much?"

FF13 keeps active battle and introduces paradigms you have to change

"The game still plays itself, boo hoo hoo, I want to be more involved"

Obviously the ideal battle systems are Star Ocean/Tales for non-turn based and Legend of Dragoon/Legend of Legaia for turn-based.
