Thanks!
That's some pretty interesting changes, never expected that they would do stuff like that.
People saying Holy and Banish were useless, that's a flaw with the game not the spell. There's useless spells and then there's spells which are useless but have potential. SE designed WHM to be incredibly boring with no DD potential in XI. Those spells should have been capable of outputting respectable damage in the same way a WHM in XIV can cast elemental spells for decent damage. Sure it's not their job to DD but if you've got the time to cast a nuke then you should be able to.
I'd honestly rather see the kind of magic system phantasy star online used. Animations change as the spell leveled up from being used. All different kinds of "spells" instead of a splash of color appearing on the target from whatever element you used. Shit would fly through the air, strike down from the sky, race along the ground, spray out in cones, go monster to monster, radiate outwards from you... etc...
You must not have spent much time around Galkans. I used it on them all the time.
I second this method. Make your spell animations grow in relation to certain intervals of your levels, and make every spell useful. FFXI had a lot of useless spells (HI2U BRD), and then tried to get people to use them with the really stupid ! system from Abyssea onward; we don't want that crap in 2.0.
Yes! More abyssea style in 14, that would be great
PLEASE explain how useless spells are generally more fun than others, I seriously do not get this at all. Do you get butterflies in your stomach and giggle "hihihi I'm casting banish!" How the fuck is that more fun than casting what you're supposed to do?
Man are some of you in for a rough wakeup call.
Sounds like casual trash "HEY LET ME PLAY THE GAME HOW I WANT OK? STOP SAYING MY DPS/HEALING/SUPPORT SUCKS! I PAY THE SAME FEE!"
Well fuck, I don't really care. If they want to play the way they want to play, then they can gtfo my raid/dungeon/boss party.
I'd argue there's more to a game that maximizing DPS for endgame raids. Sure, that's what you need to be doing *in* those raids, but if there's not other things to do that can be more laid back and enjoyable, then fuck that.
As for XI, it had some extremely rigid natural laws to how the game world worked. WHM was *never* going to have good damage, and (within the context of how the game worked) there was no expectation that it should. Antiquated, sure, but that's simply what the fundamentals of XI were.
I'm not a design expert, so I'm not going to claim I should know how combat and spells should be built into the game. I just hope they are creative and fun. And I could care less if every single one doesn't have a place in end-game raiding, there's room to have a couple that are fluff.
Magicka says hi. And that wouldn't be the most terrible route they could take.
Knowing SE, they'd do something like Crystal Chronicles for spells and combos if they really want to take that route, making it needlessly complicated. Never could pull of Holyra...
Sounds like Cholera, maybe you we're lucky you couldn't.
What about spells that can be useful, depending on the situation. About to use a few ffxi examples (sorry in advance), but for instance Jailer of Love (at 75 cap, early on) we use to have blm/add party use tier 3 elemental nuke spells instead of tier 4 for mp management / overkill purposes.
Also for soloing as a blm, it was times when the mob had low health and you know a thunder 3 would kill it (or 2), so to conserve mp you would finish it off with that tier. All i'm saying is, it will be many situations where the most damaging spell (which is most useful spell in most situations) is not the most useful spell in that situation because of mp management or casting time or other factors.
I wouldn't mind a menu like ffxi where even if the spell isn't set I can use it if I want too or set a macro for it at least I guess.
FFXI taught me that if a game is terrible enough, people will find a huge number of ways to entertain themselves. Casting useless spells is obviously one of those things.
Then try reading it again. The comment was about how something obscure, of limited use but unique, could still have a place in the world alongside the main repertoire of end-game spells. There was never a claim that said spells should be used at the exclusion of the "best", but as long as something isn't rendered obsolete (i.e. a lower tier continuing to exist once a more powerful tier is learned) it's not hurting anyone by being there. Your "OMG people are in for a wakeup call" is the confusing/amusing/stupid comment on this page.
How do you read all that in thiscomment? Maybe you should read it again, or are there like 10 hidden sentences between the rows? What is this I don't even..I don't mind highly niche spells (read: useless) because they're generally different and variety and fun and blah blah blah. What I really hate is getting multiple tiers of a single spell that each render the previous tier worthless since they literally do the exact same thing except... better.
What the fuck is going on here?
He said he thinks useless spells are generally fun, I asked why are they more fun than usefull spells. What relevance has your rant to anything?
Many people expressed they enjoy using useless spells, they are in for a rouch wakeup call because if SE doesn't fail with FFXIV once again (rofl), they'll never be able to use them on anything remotely relevant. Ever.
