To be fair, it wasn't completely ignorance. I played WoW at launch and I can say it sucked donkey balls for the first six months or so. Gameplay was so terribly bad and it was glitchy as sin I am still surprised that it survived those 6 months in order to fix itself and become what Vanilla really was.
I probably would never have retried it if it weren't for Dru really wanting to give it a shot.
Yeah, WoW came out after CoP. CoP's tendency to induce soul-crushing despair was not-a-small-factor in the exodus to WoW.
I loved getting first kill in FFXI because I loved contributing to the community. Helping to document and develop strategies for making kills better and smoother was my epeen.
Same reason I spent literal months of my life soloing things that had never been soloed before on NIN befor /DNC existed. I'm 100% nobody cared that I was the first or zomgkikokusolos but it was fun for me, and in some cases I was able to give good data on stuff to the community.
But as far as racing to first kill in FFXI, whatever, the more impressive things were being the first to complete large scale tasks like relics, mythics, salvage armor (first shiny ares body around on my server Mmmm) etc and then pumping the info back into the threads. That's what was cool.
Proof of concept? Go into FFXI and make a poll. See if there is a single old-school poster/player loved by the community more than Kirschy.
I did not realize the following:
- Shooting stars in Altepa Desert.
- Gysers in Buburimu Peninsula (Maybe Bibiki Bay?)
- Whirlpools at Purgonorgo Isle
- Galkan spinning a sign (Where/what was that for?)
- Water snakes and diving birds in Carpenter's Landing?
- Mithra character introduction poses in moghouse lodges.
- Giant clams in Korroloka.
- Baby Chocobo in the stables!
- How did one get to view the world, looking down from the sky?
Bit surprised that the Gemini Falls, in Yuhtunga Jungle, wasn't showcased. Play a game for 9 years and you still don't see everything. The scenery really did make this world feel more alive than most other games have ever hoped for.
WoW came out Nov of 2004, I lost 95% of the LS I was in to WoW, we basically had to start from scratch and find new tanks, healers, shit was a terrible time for me. I think CoP launched in 05 during the fall because I remember the southern USA being fucked over on CoP launch due to a hurricane that hit the gulf coast, all hell broke lose with stores trying to get the game around here.
New Limsa BGM:

Hmm...If Tears over Thanalan is made into CS music (like it should have been in the first place) I'll be happy, but this makes me wonder how much they're straight scrapping.
They said that there's a whole new OST, but I think some songs will stay. (there were some old tracks in Alpha but I think they acted as placeholders).
Hmm listened to it a few times now kind of undecided. Like it in some parts but others seem out of place to the song!
I think it fits quite a bit better to the area/setting and what LL is supposed to be than the original, but I have strange tastes lol.
I can see myself in Limsa listening to that. Jimmies rustled, gimme beters.
What in the blue hell was wrong with the old Limsan theme?
Damnit, I wanted to stand up and salute any time I walked into town. This is catchy and breezy, sure, but where is the inspiration?!
There's too much going on in it. >_>
Who cares bout LL, it's just a bunch of Elves. It's like the Toronto of FFXIV
Yeah this is a better song than Limsa's old, awful theme.
(' ' ) Most certainly not! I'm known for elvaan jokes in my circles.
Rather, I am a midlander male o.ob most awesome race around. Except for highlander female.
please delete >_> doubled
I'd love it if they included the orchestral LL theme from distant worlds for some LL cutscenes or something, pretty god damn epic.
Liking this new one, it suits the slightly more passive role they're making music take (which I totally agree with considering it's looping for evar), although it doesn't have anything on Gridania/the shroud's new music imo, that stuff is amazing.
I'm not liking it personally, but that's ok, I don't really like Limsa either.![]()
