I am spiteful, yes. I weighed having one last series between them versus Detroit exiting the West having lost their playoff appearance streak and went for the gut-punchiest option.

The playoff appearance streak is nice and all but to me, but not going out of the West with a whimper is more important. Either way if the Wings miss the playoffs it will be better long term (unless they make it to the WCF/SCF) because it gives them a better pick and shows that their strategy of "keep their old players and sign a has-been veteran to fill a hole" doesn't work that well.

It works when you have an awesome core to work around. Datsyuk/Zetterberg/Lidstrom/Rafalski was a great 1-2 at F and D and putting things on top of that was really easy.
