Thank you for the explanation. I see my Careful Braixen has a blue sp.atk and red sp.def...

would rather have seen atk or something take a hit... but then I thought someone was trying to get a Careful nature fennekin in the thread earlier, but it seems like careful would be bad (assuming careful always does the same thing to the stats like that) because fennekin seems reliant on sp.atk moves so... I guess I'm gonna have to take my time learning this stuff...

seems weird red is good blue is bad since outside of Asia red = bad/danger lol

:X A lot of what I'm saying is unnecessary for the player out there who just wants to experience the game. You could have the odds stacked against you and not have any problem.

When you start trying to be competitive though, a person who picked up a random pokemon vs one who has been crafted for this is more evident.

I always get confused too. -_- I stopped looking at the colors and look at the Nature page because I always switch it up, lol.

Out of curiousity, what is yours characteristics?
If you don't know, go to the same status page and tab over to the next page. It should show you what route it came from, the name of the nature, and the characteristic.

I just found a wild zapdos on route 19... while looking for kaskade oO

EDIT: and its a wandering pokemon, god now I need a pokemon with the ability to force it not to flee

I read what that means and is there any way to tell what IV it is?

Alert to sounds is really good! I believe all starters come with at least 1 perfect IV which means you got the Perfect Speed IV just like mine. Fennekin's speed stat is crazy good anyways. The only sad thing is that it has a low sp.atk.

Alert to sounds falls under the category of = 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26, 31

31 being perfect, and being that you have to have a perfect IV... You can pretty much guarantee you have a perfect speed.

Characteristics are not the best way to tell what all of your IVs are, but they can give you a solid indicator on what your "highest IV" is.

If you have Alert to sounds on a different pokemon, its highest IV could be, 1, 6, 11, 16, 21, 26 OR 31.
Meaning you could have a 6 IV or an 11 IV and that's its highest stat. Which is awful.

EV training does compensate a good bit. A properly trained EV pokemon does better than one that isn't, that's for sure. We don't know the full IV spread of your Fennekin so I can't tell you what its overall is. However, having a Perfect IV in Speed is at the very least, not bad.

If you had a Perfect IV in something like... Attack... or Def instead... well... that would have been a really sad Fennekin, lol, unless I got to check and see what the other IVs are.

So how does one find out the IV stat spread? If I have a quirky/mischevious Pidgey, it could have a 31 in sp.atk but then again it might not. So how do you actually confirm which number it is? Or is that something that can only be found out by leveling it up and capping its stats?

Sorry for all the questions, the wiki pages are such a massive infodump that it's much easier to ask pinpoint questions to someone who's knowledgable

I typically run with whatever the game throws at me until post game. Post game I break out my breeders gloves and work on making my "perfect" pokemon.

The party that took me to the Elite Four are always kept for our memories. :3

Checking IVs can be done a couple of ways.

1) Beat the Elite Four, get into Post Game, go to the "Judge" and have him look at your pokemon. He will tell you the stats. (this is what I do, I hate working on pokemon prior to this and I like to just experience the game first--but if you gotta know right now...)
2) Break out the IV calculator. If you've been EV training, I suggest you use Serebii's. If you have a brand new pokemon you are better off, saving your game, having 5 rare candies, and using this simple one to check. (this works really well, I prefer this method except...)

...Also if you have a pokemon from older gens, there is a chance that the base stats may have been increased and these calculators are broken. Seems like GameFreak has buffed some pokemon (example being Pikachu)

Edit: By EV training, that means have you been letting your Pidgey get EXP. If you never had your Pidgey get ANY exp whatsoever (besides Rare candies) then you can use the 2nd calculator.

Rare Candies give +1 level to a pokemon without giving any EV, making it perfect for checking an IV as there's no extra stats to factor in.

Thank you. I think I get all this stuff now. And I realize EV/IV optomization is really only necessary for being competitive. It sounds much better to build a perfect party postgame really, I'm sure it would be much too difficult for me to do much earlier. I'm just trying to get a handle on what I should/shouldn't be spending a lot of time on right now... and you've been incredibly helpful, thanks so much :3

From what I understand, once it flees something like 20 times it goes to a certain spot and just waits for you there (and doesn't flee anymore).

Silenka: Definitely for the best, especially if you're new to the whole thing. It gets very overwhelming and daunting to take this on while you're still learning about pokemon. Add in the fact that there's a lot of uncertainties and no complete database for information, you'll be spending a lot of time spinning your wheels and getting no where.

Domin is correct. The legendary birds will continue to insta-flee quite a few times (17ish, I lost count) until they rest in Sea Spirit's Den. *edited the correct name, just remembered it* I keep wanting to call it Sea Serpent's Grotto... lol...

Scored a few more FCs over last night/this morning. One of the safaris has Excadrill w/ Mold Breaker. Also apparently one has Frogadier with DW ability. Still trying to get one of those. And traded on GTS for a japanese ditto. :D Happy day
