It's buy-to-play. It has a cash shop built right in too.

The game is pretty fun, though it has a long ways to go until it's "great". As much as I want to recommend the game to people, I'd say hold off for a sale or at least until they push out a patch or two to see what they fix immediately. Chat feels very abandoned and the game overall feels more like it's geared towards small groups hanging out often.
Cool, thanks for the heads up. I think ill wait then.
Unless you are really into shooter type games, it will get boring fast.
Pretty much this. I'd love to say its amazing, but really so far it's like any open world game. Side missions are repetitive, main story is kind of short, only 7 dungeons, pvp unbalanced, and lack of gear progression. I enjoy the game and don't regret buying it but if you have others to play do yourself a favor and wait till more patches roll out and maybe a dlc or 2 come out.
Holy fuck this game is under insane fire from everything.
It has some bad issues yea but no MMO is released good/perfect the first week. They've been doing server updates every day and the game is much more stable now. At its core the game is pretty amazing, and its been incredibly enjoyable so far, especially the story.
Anyways a huge system patch will be released along with new content on monday/tuesday, draft notes http://forums.defiance.com/showthrea...er-solstice%29. Another patch is expected to be released 2 weeks later.
Picked it up today. I'll let you know what I think of it.
Ok, played for a couple of hours. Reminds me of a poor man's Borderlands. It definitely has the framework in place to be a really good game. Aiming can be a bit sketchy at times and vehicle mechanics aren't the best. The environments are done fairly well. Enemies remind me a LOT of Borderlands. Tons of people are currently playing. Very loot driven. I was thoroughly entertained. Unfortunately you can only be one of two different races(and one is humans.) So for a game based on a show with 9 different races that was a bit surprising. If they can continue with regular updates and additional content I see this game holding my interest for a while.
The first System Patch went out to PC and Xbox360 this morning. PS3 players will have to wait till Sony delivers......

The show premiered last night and it was wonderful except for some laughable CGI. They've added Episode 1 & 2 tie in content via the pursuits tab. I'm positive now that the show/game tie in will work out really well in the long run.
You can stream the pilot episode here for free.

It is insanely borderlands like, there is no doubt the devs looked at it first for inspiration of how their core gameplay was going to work. Tip, the games progression isn't heavily grind/gear based like most MMOs or borderlands. There is a insane amount of freedom and you can do a lot of things from the start, be it running through all of the mainstory missions in a day, doing PvP from the get go, or going after region pursuits.
I spent most of the evening just running around doing random side quests. Had a one glitch on me. Logged out and logged back in later and my character was in mid air constantly falling. Game wouldn't reload me anywhere else. So I had to start a new character to keep playing. Not complaining, all new mmo's have glitches. Hopefully it straightened itself out so I can play tonight.
Man. Dudes on Defiance's forums are a bunch of whiny fucking babies.
Got into my first big event yesterday. Had to blow up some crystals(which take entirely too long considering the amount of people present.) Then go to fight a massive worm type thing that spits out little bug creatures. The problem is that there are so many people attacking that there's almost no chance of being killed during the fight. I was able to walk away midfight to drop a deuce and I came back still standing.
Snagged some nice weapons as well, so I'm no longer running with the original quest reward weapons I had been. Rarity is handled exactly like Borderlands. White text is common, blue uncommon, purple rare, orange ultra rare(at least I think.) Managed to get a purple submachine gun that is pretty handy. All in all very entertaining evening. Played with a buddy the whole time. Sadly voice chat cut out after about an hour. I could hear him talking, but he couldn't hear me. So that needs fixed.
Roughly the same rarity system as in most MMOs anyway. The game still sounds pretty disappointing :/ Time will tell though!
Honestly if they can eliminate a lot of the bugs/glitches it will be fine. Even with the problems I'm still having a lot of fun playing.
I'm honestly more concerned with Trion then the game itself. The Rift team which was it's money maker got gutted hard due to the End of Nations fiasco (Trion moved all development in house on it and it's cost them a lot of money). Hopefully they won't do to Defiance with what happened with Rift, get the game established, have some horrible bugs that get reported on PTR make it to live then gut the team to a bare bones state once it's established.
I just can't see AA doing well in the NA market, but I'm just a PvE carebear talking.
But yes, Trion pulling a XIV on Rift is worrisome and a dangerous precedent if they don't divert funds back once they've handled EoN and Defiance's launch.
