How are some of you guys getting 5k back? If it has anything to do with me being single with no kids then that's the only thing I can think of. I'm still paying my student loans which amounts to about 105k left and my gross income is 81k.
Having like 16k in mortgage interest/property taxes paid helps.

That and student loans and a kid with medical expenses...and daycare expenses...and wife works in the school district, so she can write off about 500$ in stuff she spent for the course of the year

Dude with a 81k a year job all you have to do is live like us poor people and you will have well over 5k left over at the end of the year. Heck If I add up 2 years salary Im still 20k under you and I have a nice house a new car, 2 kids (one that goes to private school), now if you add mine and wifes salary for the year we are only 30k under you so... yeah.

There is a common misconception with far too many people that a large refund equates to good. People getting $5,000 back gave the government a $5,000 loan that was completely interest free, so think of it that way. I'd kill for a refund, but I owe an obscene amount due to liquidating all of my Apple stock in September, when I purchased it in the 90's.

500ish. Putting all of my lawn mowing money as a kid into Apple ended up paying off, despite it being crap for a while in the beginning.

Good thing you got out now. Apple is on the fast-track to becoming EA for non-gamers.

That's pretty much why I sold. I grew up on Apple computers, so I invested with a company I loved even though people said it was a bad buy. Then went from being the self-titled rebels/"Think Different" to the pop/let's be a slave to commercialism crowd. On the positive side, I sold it before it fell to the $450s it is now.

Noticed something odd, I made over $10,000 more than I did last year but I got $40 less back this year in tax returns. 16k (part time) last year, 27k this year and less return. Anyone happen to know a reason why? These are simple forms, no extra deductions, single, no kids, etc blah blah, lol. Had the one job last year, had one job for 6 months and a new job for the rest this year....

Because you had less taken out of your checks in relation to your tax liability this year than last year.

I'm a business owner so I get quite a bit of write offs that I know most people don't, which is why mine is what it is.

This year specifically, has anyone filed Married/Joint-Injured Spouse and received back their return yet? First time filing under this status and our preparer really screwed us on both federal and state. They told us at first 2-3 weeks but now won't give a date and the IRS won't either. Best we got was 8-11 weeks from IRS, up to 4 months from State.

Federal refunds are supposed to be received within 3 weeks, roughly, but I know plenty of people that are getting them within 8-9 days. I know in Virginia people are receiving their state refund before the federal refund.

I had this happen to a client last year and it took him about 2 months to get his refund. Even to this day the refund status check still says his return is in process.

Edit - Too much coffee and forgetting to really answer. If it just says it's in process I'd give it another week or two, and then call the IRS to see what the issue is.
