    Disney Infinity (For Everything)

Disney Interactive today unveiled its most ambitious gaming initiative ever, Disney Infinity. This all new game platform unlocks the freedom to create stories and play experiences starring beloved characters from The Walt Disney Company and Pixar Animation Studios. Disney Infinity allows players to both experience original adventures in some of their favorite Disney and Pixar worlds and to build their own worlds using the power of their imagination.

“Disney Infinity introduces a new way to interact with the best of Disney on one game platform, both now and in the future," said John Pleasants, co-president, Disney Interactive. “With this innovative approach to gaming, Disney Infinity will bring to life new characters, stories and environments from The Walt Disney Company over time in a way that will delight fans and gamers alike.”

In a way that only Disney can, Disney Infinity integrates collectible character figures that come to life in the game. These figures provide experiences that are true to these characters and stories, as well as the opportunity to bring characters from various Disney and Pixar films to play together in a virtual “Toy Box.” This all-new game universe will launch in June across all consoles and will have a phased roll out across mobile and online devices throughout 2013.

Throughout each story-driven experience, called a “Play Set,” players will solve challenging puzzles, battle enemies and explore iconic locations from famous Disney properties, while collecting unique characters, vehicles, and gadgets from each world and saving them to a virtual “Toy Box.” Players can access their “Toy Box” and build and customize their own unique virtual world using their favorite characters, vehicles, settings and accessories. Disney Infinity allows players the opportunity to share these unique creations in the “Toy Box” mode with friends both online and off.

    The Disney Infinity Platform includes:

Disney Infinity Interactive Pieces – Initially a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces will be introduced that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences.
Disney Infinity Interactive Character Figures – Seventeen character figures will allow players to experience a variety of their favorite characters in true to property experiences and in “Toy Box” mode.
Disney Infinity Base – When figures are placed on the Infinity base, they unlock the world and play experiences of Disney Infinity.
Disney Infinity Power Discs – Interactive discs can be placed on the Infinity base to power up characters and “Toy Box” with unique powers, customizations and gadgets.

“Disney Infinity combines prominent Disney and Pixar characters and scenarios in a way that mimics how kids play in real life,” said John Blackburn, vice president and general manager, Avalanche Software. “With our platform’s unique gameplay mechanics and innovative approach to user generated content within the “Toy Box” mode, Disney Infinity will spark imaginations and provide endless hours of fun and creativity.”

I'm kinda surprised that Pokemon hasn't jumped on this already.

That said, this business model with Disney is a license to print money. It'll probably be huge.

Disney skylanders hurray? The toybox mode sounds interesting but obviously will get really expensive to do alot of stuff your gonna actually want to make I bet. Disney and Pixar IPs are enough to fill any game but can imagine further down the line if they decide to use Star Wars or Marvel how crazy this thing will get.

Disney Interactive to lay-off several hundred people, Marvel & Star Wars content in development
Walt Disney's interactive-media unit is preparing to lay off several hundred people despite a strong launch for its videogame "Infinity," according to people close to the company.

The cuts at Disney Interactive, which has undergone multiple rounds of layoffs in recent years as it struggled to reach profitability, are expected to begin after the media giant releases its quarterly financial results Wednesday, these people said.

The planned layoffs follow a recent internal announcement by Disney Interactive President Jimmy Pitaro that he would reorganize the group and shuffle several members of his senior executive team.

Mr. Pitaro took sole control of Disney Interactive in November after his former co-president, John Pleasants, was pushed out.

Among the operations expected to be hit by the layoffs is the struggling Playdom social-gaming business, which Mr. Pleasants led before Disney acquired the company in 2010 for $563 million. In an interview as he was exiting, Mr. Pleasants said Playdom was "still challenged" and that he "could have been maybe a little more aggressive" in streamlining its operations.

Disney Interactive has about 3,000 employees.

Disney is expected to continue investing in "Infinity," a combination videogame and toy line that launched in August and has sold more than three million copies world-wide. Disney spent more than $100 million developing and launching "Infinity," which was considered critical for its continuing videogame efforts after a number of failures.

New versions of "Infinity" featuring characters from Disney's Marvel superhero unit and the Star Wars universe it acquired along with Lucasfilm in 2012 are being developed, one of these people said.

During the quarter ended Sept. 28, the launch of "Infinity" helped Disney Interactive to generate $16 million operating income on $396 million of revenue, only the second profitable quarter in its five-year history.

However, the unit still seeks its first profitable fiscal year. Disney Chief Executive and Chairman Robert Iger had set that as a goal for the fiscal year ended Sept. 28. But the company pushed back the target date when the release of "Infinity" was delayed to August from June.

Disney Interactive also operates websites including Disney.com and produces mobile games and content.

To be discontinued. Final sets to arrive in June, no more after that.

By now you may have heard the news that we have made the difficult decision to discontinue production of Disney Infinity. From the beginning, Disney Infinity was built for you—our fans—and I wanted to take a moment to thank you not just for your support over the years, but for creating a community that made Disney Infinity more than just a game.

Our goal for Disney Infinity was to bring the best of Disney storytelling to life in homes around the world, and with your support we accomplished that. We hope you had as much fun playing the game as we had making it.

So what’s next for Disney Infinity? We have two final retail releases coming, including three new characters from Alice Through the Looking Glass later this month, and the Finding Dory Play Set launching in June.

And as we turn to the next chapter in our story, I want to thank everyone who helped bring Disney Infinity to life, particularly Disney’s Glendale-based production and publishing teams, our external development partners, and of course the incredible Avalanche team for their tireless dedication to this project.

But most of all, I want to again thank you for making Disney Infinity a part of your lives—and for adding to the Disney legacy by being a part of this community.
    http://venturebeat.com/2016/05/10/th...console-games/

After a thorough evaluation, we have modified our approach to console gaming and will transition exclusively to a licensing model. This shift in strategy means we will cease production of Disney Infinity, where the lack of growth in the toys-to-life market, coupled with high development costs, has created a challenging business model. This means that we will be shutting down Avalanche Software, our internal studio that developed the game. This was a difficult decision that we did not take lightly given the quality of Disney Infinity and its many passionate fans.

Huh. I thought this game was making them millions hand over fist, especially with the Star Wars stuff.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Disney in general has never really known how to handle making their own games. Every now and then something would come along like Epic Mickey or this game, but there's a lot more misses than hits. Surprised to see Disney Infinity get cancelled though, there really was so much potential there that was never fully realized.
