half the book (old test) doesn't apply in the sense that jesus dying for your sins equates to a new contract with god where he doesn't curb stomp California because San Francisco is to full of sin. There is a noticeable change in how any and all situations are handled in the new vs old test.
It's a beautiful little chart.
And that doesn't clue people in? Could it be that the two manmade books were written during different time periods and during that interval man was making progress as far as what is moral and acceptable behavior so the new one is less cruel than the old one? No, god, the perfect being with infinite wisdom must have changed his mind and decided he was wrong before. So he sacrificed himself to himself to placate himself, right?
Like I said, cherry picking.
I should also mention that Catholics don't take the old testament literally. So that effects a lot when it comes to the two (for me anyway).
fail to see the "cherry picking" in my statments, not like anyone with 1/2 a brain is claiming the bible is perfect its written by MEN and translated over and over. taking anything in the bible as word for word is stupid , using it as a moral guide on how to be a decent person is not.
I didn't mean in your statement. Just the idea of only some of the bible being true and useful is the very definition of cherry picking.
But I disagree with the second statement. I think if half a book is okay with slavery and rape, its probably still a bad idea to use the other half of it as a moral guide.
that seems nonsensical. the two are vastly different.
That would be like saying since you hated the Hobbit, you couldn't like the Lord of the Rings. (obviously a lot more devotion is done the the bible, but maybe you can see what I mean).
If Jesus teaches good morals and does turn people into good samaritans, it's irrelevant what the old testament says in regards to that.
I think the crux of this is that people don't need a boogeyman to be scared into being good. If you do, you're probably a terrible person. Evolution made us empathetic for a reason.
Point was the old testament is okay with both of those. And that doesn't sound very moral to me. And if that came from god, why should I want to use new testament which also came from god?
Liking something and using something as a basis for your morality are two very different things. But Jesus is god right? New testament comes from Jesus' teachings? Old testament also comes from god right? How can you say what is written in there is irrelevant? Doesn't throwing that out just because we as a society don't like those ideas anymore work as an argument against the fact that either of these books came from god?
Either way I have to head to bed, but I'll leave you this video for some food for thought.
put 10 5 year old kids in a room with toys unsupervised , humans are animals dont think for a second empathy alone keeps mankind from self destruction.
To tyrath : bibles written by man not by god , same for its translation , and the problems with all this arise because of its interpretation by man.
god had time to age
omnipotent being
lol
I was speaking to your actual written statement not what I believe. As in, that you make it seem like no one should follow jesus if they don't follow the old testament. As I said above, I do not take the old testament literally (as I am Catholic). That doesn't mean everyone does though. And I would not yap at anyone if they only followed the new testament and ignored the old.
As well, you two act like we've never had this kind of conversation on bg before ever. Think most of the links you guys have thrown in hoping for that big awakening have been posted tons of times on bg already.
It really is a dead horse.
last post before bed and this is the best example of religion being silly but still being ok
MORMON..isim? ... that shit is mindblowingly silly , like ... exscuse me sir wtf are you doing levels of silly.
Mormons.. pretty nice people for the most part .... little awkward but i know quite a few of them and their kids came out a hellva lot nicer then the "christian" kids i went to HS with.
Think a better example would be Quakers. Well, maybe they aren't that silly, but I love them for being way ahead of the game when it comes to religious stubbornness about doing the right thing.
Watched the vid, kinda stupid its arguing a point that skips the free will aspect of the bible. and you missed the part where i called mormon"sism" silly trust me im the first person to bible beat anyone whos overly shove it down your throat religious and will point out the MAKES NO SENSE sir in shit immediately.
I know we've had these conversations before, I've been part of them before, but they still amaze me each time. What you said earlier about a forum of mostly intelligent and rational people...yeah, that's how I feel every time someone comes on here talking about or defending religion. I was raised atheist though, so I have a very different viewpoint than someone who was brainwashed from birth.
This is why you can't take BG seriously. Mazmilks when it suits.
