So I haven't played the original Xenoblade Chronicles, am I going to miss out on a lot in this plot because of it? From trailers they don't seem to be connected (aside from the way all Xeno games are connected), so I'm hoping I can just jump into this and finish the original when I get around to it.

Soooo.. I completely blanked on the fact that this game would have a story till right now.

Honestly what I've been most concerned about since running around in mechs doesn't hold much appeal to me.

That said, I can't quite say that trailer does a good job of presenting the plot. Earth went boom, either directly by the hands of humans or retaliation from some alien species. This bunch, being some of the survivors, settle on another planet. Potential alien threat has either followed them or they begin pissing off some natives and, well... fight. The fact our characters are likely silent protags probably won't help the plot much, maybe even hurting it. Aside from the gray-haired girl, we don't really get a good idea of who potential party members could be, either. Though I'll probably be in the minority hoping that roster stays human.

Xeno games usually take their time unfolding the story and it's details so I'm not surprised that trailers are rather vague in that aspect.

So Reddit is being super speculativey and theorizing a May 31st release date... Honestly, with Nintendo's usually announcement to release date, I would expect late June or July if a release date is announced today.
