Curators to power level your BLADE level, then whatever after you hit Lv 10 on that.

While you level up, pretty much anything goes. Once you get end game, and want to take on the ground only super tyrants:

Arts: Gain TP XX, and Overdrive Extension XX in weapons, with Potential XX in your armor slots.
Drifter class - only class with 5 skills.
Dual Guns - Ghost Walker Skill which gives you almost permanent shadow clones to absorb hits.
    Whatever melee weapon you want
Melee Art gives TP Skill - gives more TP when using melee arts; double with an aura active.
Ranged art gives TP Skill - gives more TP when using ranged arts; double with an aura active.
Overdrive + Time skill - Adds time to your Overdrive when you combo your Overdrive points.

That lets you kill just about anything on the ground; Long Sword is the most popular melee weapon but any of them will work. Skells will kill anything outside of caves, so it's really only a select few tyrants that require all of that, and I don't think any of them are segment related for a 100% clear.

Okay I understand about half of that so far (going through the in game guide ATM to read some other stuff) but I assume you say Drifter class because it's like the Squire class from Tactics and can do pretty much everything, while specific classes can only access what they can access?

From looking around it seems everything is viable and works and whatever so it is what you enjoy, but you will get more HP/Survivability from the top tree which will help for a new player. The thing is I can't seem to tell which is the most fun lol. Right now I have everything at 3-5 trying to see which is the most fun to play, at least while leveling or early on.

Once you get all the way to the end of a class branch and master the final class you can equip its weapons on any class. So you just use whatever weapons you like the arts of on Drifter since it gives you access to 5 passive skills, more than any other class.

This. The only thing that would make something non-viable is survival but with a bit of research and proper Reflect Damage augments/traits nothing can kill you anyway. Alternatively you could use HB, Mia and L to perma topple any enemy in the game making any defense a wasted stat. As far as fun goes I'd say it really boils down to which animations you like the best since all weapons, ranged or melee, have the potential to destroy all but 1 tyrant in a matter of seconds. The only one who can survive barring the Infinite HP Global Nemeses is Gradivus the Headless Emperor (as seen in the above video) who has 100 million HP. The next closest Tyrant HP is only 10 million from Telethia and you have to fight him in a Skell anyway cause flying.

Personally I'm a fan of Dual Guns using Violent Streak and Executioner. It's got an Equilibrium Gun-kata vibe to it.

Don't worry about affinity, there a no lockouts in the game. You get to continue after you beat the game and you also get support missions that boost affinity by quite a bit.

Akiyama play whatever you want. If you wish to participate in endgame (post beating the story) that's when worrying about builds begins.

Think you only need to raise affinity on 2 certain characters to progress the story. If you hadn't used them at all, you'll need to just spam basic missions from the board or set them up in combat to do a lot of soul voices with them (this takes a very long time). I had generally just checked through basic missions with gathered stuff that I already had to just instant complete them for easy affinity. It doesn't give a ton so this may still take a bit but luckily they only need to get to 1 full heart for the story related affinity quests.

But yeah, for anyone else I would definitely save their affinity quests for post game when you can raise affinity a lot easier.

Well I'll be stuck on whatever chapter it is for Gwin's affinity. I ran out of gathering(yeah you can actually run out of those). Soul voices via battle TAKE A LONG TIME.

Anyway, finished Chapter 8...and the character I want is locked behind Chapter 9 and an affinity mission boo whoo..

I'll need a new skell too. The focus on this game is too much on post game -.-

Just got access to party members, best to stick with Elma and Lin? Who should I use as a 4th?

Gwin and Lao both need 1 affinity heart for main story requirements, so use them for a bit at times when you can use anyone if you don't want to be blocked later like Sky. I recommend L for beginners since he's good support/dps that isn't restricted in story missions (just don't give both Lin and him trash talk, 1 tank is enough) and has great battle quotes. A decent idea would also be to use a 4th that uses the same weapons as you to unlock more arts through their affinity missions. Finally, if you're having trouble or can't use a restricted character in a mission, you can get a random person from the scout console. Just check their status to make sure they have arts and skills leveled.

I've been using Elma and Lin because I actually like them(well in Elma's case, she's the very first person you meet in the game, so she kinda stuck with me lol).

My build is very strong burst wise but then there is long time waiting for everything to get back up. Guess I'll farm some cooldown reducers if possible.

The Chapter 9 boss fight was extremely hectic even at 44. But mostly due to its second phase.. First phase is all physical which I have high resistance for.

Bah hired a scout and got it over with.
