What I don't get is why there are crystals all around NLA, from the crash, but nowhere else on Primordia.

That was explained back in chp1. That is NLAs life boat sort of thing. Without it they'd all be dead.

Its an idea they ripped from a certain ff game.

I've been having several Joker and Vesper memorials...working up some kind of infinite overdrive build. 500+BP to work with.

So what does overdrive do in a skell?

Various things, depending on the skell used.

Light Armor Overdrives

OBORO (Urban Type) - Deal more damage, take less ranged damage, regen appendages.
JINRAI (Formula Type) - Accuracy, Evasion, and Critical Chance increase. Lower cooldowns.
HAGANE (Verus Type) - Increases melee damage, twice the appendage regen, and reflects physical attacks.

Medium Armor Overdrives

NAGI (Lailah Type) - HP and appendage regen, takes less damage, immune to debuffs.
HIBANA (Inferno Type) - Appendage regen, increased ranged damage, and reflects thermal damage.

Heavy Armor Overdrives

GEKITETU (Mastema Type) - Reduces damage taken, increases ranged attack, and reflect Beam damage.
KURENAI (Amdusias Type) - Absorbs fuel with melee attacks, double Crush damage, and increases melee attack.
KAMIKAZE (Urban Type) - Increases accuracy, attack and evasion.

Special Overdrives

LEGION (Ares Type) - Increases accuracy, attack, and evasion. Reduces cooldowns and regens appendages.

What is the quickest way to build battle points postgame? I've exhausted all the probes/field treasure. Not sure how to maximize battle points so I can experiment with different builds.

Go to your scout console in the barracks (not the skell refueling one), go to support missions and run "As if a cloud" i think its what it's called. It nets you 60bp per run and a run can be done in less than 5 minutes.

Support missions also become your solution for affinity with characters you didnt use. I think they were dlc that came with Alexa and H.B. etc.

Don't do that one. Do the one before it. It gives less BP per run but more when you compare based on time spent.

How does the joining a friend's squad when you log in work, can you actually play with people, or is it just for squad missions?

It will put you and your friend in the same Squad, but the only time you can party together is doing Squad missions, when they become available (possibly if you are able to find them and talk them them as well, but I don't remember if you can recruit them or you need to use the Blade consul). One initiates the mission, and then the others have to be quick enough to accept it before anyone else in the Squad. If the Global Nemesis is up, the same applies but that can be spammed, so long as you have the Medals to do so.
