I was admonished for this in elementary school, and our age difference isn't that great. Specifically, I was able to read as a well-educated adult would, and my teacher—in front of the class, mind you—told me to stop. They said that I was reading too quickly, and that my class could not keep up. I either needed to slow down or let someone else read instead.

Whenever my less-well-read classmates had to read, I would just read it to myself and then just keep going. The only times they were asked to read it was either out of a history textbook or a novel we were assigned, and either way there's always more to read. Although, I once got detention from my English teacher for reading. She had assigned us a book to read, and was having the class read it out loud, one paragraph at a time, over several days. I finished the book the first day and started reading a Star Wars novel while I waited for everyone else to catch up. She didn't like that.

I continued reading the Star Wars novel during detention, and during class again the next day. She got all pissed off, asked why I wasn't reading her book. I told her I finished it, she didn't believe me, started asking questions about the characters and shit. Answered them all correctly, and she finally left me alone after that. She was apparently the only teacher in my school not aware of how much I enjoy reading, because the rest of them encouraged it.

As nobody really talked about it in the thread, dyslexia isn't really about reading aloud, though it is often a good practice to help a dyslexic person to read something.

With my brother, his dyslexia makes it so that his reading comprehension is downright terrible. He is literate by all means, but it is slow and difficult for him. To someone who is dyslexic, the mind tends to read words and then forget the order they were in--thus causing comprehension to fail. Words will appear out of order, or simply lose their meaning to him. Read/say the word "door" ten times and you'll know the feeling. It loses meaning and becomes just a word. Usually this does not extend to flipping the orders of letters in a word when reading, that tends to happen with spelling. To overcome the reading comprehension problem, a dyslexic reader must read slowly, deliberately. As both are required to read aloud, that is how it helps.

In some dyslexics, my brother included, this can extend to numbers. 42 + 53 might become 53 + 42 in his mind. Or 24 + 35, depending on how closely he's paying attention. He has had times where he would read a phone number, get it wrong in his head, and then get it wrong again (from his brain) typing it in his phone, yet it is now correct in his phone. But he had the feeling he got it wrong, so he would try to see his mistake and get very confused trying to find it when there isn't one.

Lastly, spelling. Dyslexics are often atrocious at spelling. Worse than a normal person who is "bad" at spelling. Not just a normal misspelling of something to make it more like the way it is pronounced, just outright incorrect.

And, to be fair, I'll post a recording tomorrow on my crappy mic when it's not 2 AM. Hopefully others haven't taken all the good speeches by then.

Edit: Flipping word order occasionally is not dyslexia. Everyone does that. It's when you do it for everything you read that it dyslexia.
