As many as 80 people were publicly executed across North Korea — some for infractions as minor as watching South Korean movies or possessing a Bible — in the first known mass executions in the Kim Jong-un regime, South Korean media reported.

People were executed in Wonsan, Chongjin, Sariwon and Pyongsong. No one was put to death in Pyongyang, North Korea’s capital, UPI reported.

Eight people were tied to stakes at a stadium in Wonsan before they were executed with a machine gun, a source told the South Korean newspaper JoongAng Ilbo.

About 10,000 men, women and children were forced to watch the killings.

“I heard from the residents that they watched in terror as the corpses were (so) riddled by machine-gun fire that they were hard to identify afterward,” a source told the JoongAng Ilbo.

Most of the victims in Wonsan were charged with watching or illegally trafficking South Korean videos, prostitution, or possessing a Bible, Fox News reported. Relatives of those executed most likely were sent to prison camps.

Simultaneous executions across the country could suggest an extreme measure by Mr. Kim’s regime to quell public unrest. The common theme of the persecution was crimes related to South Korea or corruption of public morals, Fox News said.

Well its somewhat important, especially considering freedom of religion is such a big thing in the states. I could certainly see a national leader going apeshit over a lack of religious freedom - especially from a country we're already annoyed with.

I was driving at the fact that the Korean source is part of the these three (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chojoongdong), ontop of whatever the herpaderping emphasis on the Bible is by the WT (again, lol).

I'd probably wait for a more reliable source to get the numbers right (also maybe the facts, since i'd hope we automatically become skeptical of a Fox source).

North and South Korea have exchanged fire Monday across a maritime border, according to South Korea's semi-official Yonhap news agency.

North Korea began a live-fire drill off its west coast, launching several artillery shells that fell south into South Korean waters, Yonhap said. South Korea responded by firing back.

I'm pretty sure that at this point, no one wants to suddenly become responsible for the millions of starving (and potentially brain-washed) people that would come as the result of ousting the gov't of the North. While it may seem like the "right" thing to do, it would be a logistical nightmare.

I think we'll see a continuance of the status quo for a long time to come, barring an actual invasion by the North, or a nuke-shot.

News sites here in SK are saying that NK sent word to SK this morning that they would be doing drills there today. SK returned fire to wave their metaphorical wang back at the north.

That was my reaction too. Unless things really get serious, any news I hear about North Korea doing X or Y currently is just basically none-news that other news reports because they are bored/lack of interesting things to report.

The last "serious" news would be (for me, based on memory) when NK I think sank a boat/submarine with some SK personnel on board. Something like that.

Even when that happens it's not really news, because nothing of any significance is ever done in response.

War with NK is NEVER. GOING. TO. HAPPEN. They're not crazy enough to use whatever nuclear capabilities they've gleaned from Russian dinner napkins from the 60s and no one else wants to invade a country that will inevitably become a leech on them for decades afterward.

Kim and co. will continue middling about in their little neverland, barely surviving off foreign aid, counterfeiting US currency, and selling meth (not joking) until someone in the military usurps the government (probably with foreign aid), after which they'll become a certified international welfare state rather than just a functional one as they are now.

Just to clarify a little, the last few times anything was hit (the boat sinking a few years ago, and that island taking a couple shots) were when Lee Myoung-bak was president in SK. He had a very weak policy towards NK, and there was a chain of command set up so that any retaliation fire had to be given the green light from pretty high up the ladder. The current president, Park Geun-hye, is far more willing to exchange fire (her father was a dictator, after all). The current policy is return fire first, ask questions later.

I agree that nothing significant will get done any time soon, but just wanted to point out that the current administration here is more likely to escalate small encounters, especially if something were to actually be hit.

Almost everything with NK is a non-story and has been since at least the Clinton administration.
