The dude thought it would be a good idea to go to a country that has a known reputation for human rights violations and detaining foreigners on anything they can in order to extort the detainee's home nation. Then decided it would be cool to try and steal stuff in said nation. I'm feeling hard pressed to feel sympathy for him when it was entirely brought on himself through his own actions.

He did it because of the obscene human rights violations nk is notorious for. He was doing what little he could to bring back evidence of the harm they do, and paid a heavy price for it.

What you're saying is not dissimilar to whites getting punished for helping saves escape to the north. They knew the risks and did it anyways, fuck them right?
