Can't hit us yet, they can try to nuke Alaska if they want.

it's actually been a while since i looked into it but we have interceptor batteries stationed in Vandenberg, California and Fort Greely, Alaska and they've failed to destroy the target warhead in 3 out of the 5 heavily scripted, optimal conditions tests since 2010.

so as long as Kim only fires one missile at a time and we are alerted to its launch before it launches and we know its flight path beforehand and it's during the daytime and there are no decoys almost half of the time it'll work every time

We have a missile interceptor battery in S. Korea now too though - I'm not sure if it's fully operational yet.

Little radiation might alleviate SF's housing prices, not all bad.

As AG was alluding to, hitting a projectile with another projectile is super hard. We probably don't do it because we can't reliably do it.

Also, dropping a potential nuke onto a potential ally to prove a point probably isn't ideal.

True...hard to find a literally safe place to bullseye a nuclear warhead in the air. Forgot about that.

Well if it's actually an armed nuke, the place its exploded debris lands is a secondary concern to the mandatory at-all-costs mission of blowing it up before it reaches its target. Simply intercepting one with an anti-missile...missile is unlikely to (or would render impossible) cause a nuclear detonation. There would be some scattering of radioactive material but nothing like what occurs when a nuclear warhead detonation occurs as designed.

But regardless I'm talking about their unarmed ICBM test launches.

    N. Korea almost definitely doesn't yet have the technology to shrink their nuclear weapon to the point where it can be placed atop an ICBM.

Scattering of nuclear material at altitude is probably worse than letting a dud land No one is going to have complete faith that NK can launch a working ICBM until they do it, and thus no one is going to completely believe that blowing up a NK missile is better than not.

Wait, why would there be nuclear material in a dud?

If NK launches an ICBM and we shoot it down near Asia, which we have to because hitting it after it reaches cruising speed is hard, then Asia deals with the fallout.

If their missile would not have gone off as intended, the environmental and human casualties (years of life lost) might be substantially lower if we just let it hit.

That is obviously not a risk we are willing to take for San Francisco, but maybe South Korea is.

If S Korea didn't want us to shoot down N Korean nukes, they wouldn't let us install a missile defense battery in their country.

It's not ideal but in just terms of fallout blowing it up is better than letting it detonate. Some of the common fission products (namely Iodine, Cesium and Strontium and to lesser extent several others) are significantly worse biological threats

But again, I'm talking about shooting down their test rocket launches. No fear of radioactive material dispersion there.

Oh yeah test rocket whatever. Ruin their tests. Also can we even call these intercontinental when even without a warhead the rocket couldn't even fly the distance across Texas
