I don't get the target of Guam. Why not an actual state? Or if that's too much and want to hit some bases isn't Diego Garcia closer? Island has more Asians on it then united state citizens at times.

Uh, Diego Garcia is way further, it's in the Indian Ocean. It's also UK-owned despite the US base there.

Guam is a US territory, our closest to North Korea, and has two US bases there. There's less chance of failure firing near Guam than the much further Hawaii.

Yeah we have bases there and they certainly help with our presence in that side of the world but seems kind of low value target in terms of our military strength (been awhile since I been there but at any given time was all of about 2-4 subs and 0-1 carriers at the Naval base at a given time) or American's caring (or for that matter even knowing it's a territory lol) for something that would ya know result your entire annihilation.

But yeah guess based on the previous missile tests would make an actual state pretty not the best odds. And I guess people who are already crazy enough to doom their country are fine with blowing anything up

Also, nuking a state would 100% ensure total glassing of NK. Landing a missile 10 miles off the coast of Guam is a fairly measured way to show off the size of your nuclear dick.

That is why I think they will actually do this. I don't think they realize that this president has wanted to use nukes since the day he took office and is just looking for an excuse.

i lean towards the take North Korea won't actually launch anything anywhere near Guam. on the international stage the North Korean regime has never behaved as irrationally as it pretends to be, it is still fundamentally a self-interested tyranny whose primary concern is its own continued existence. launching propaganda barrages against America to bolster a domestic campaign of control that relies upon fear of the US boogeyman is one thing, actually conducting military action against an American target is something entirely else. whatever imagined gain to be had from such a course is hugely offset by the potential for retaliation, a retaliation that would threaten the regime's survival as little else could.

all that said, there is a new man in charge and his behavior is less understood than was his father's. hitherto he has mostly consolidated control by murdering every family member that could threaten his rule and continued the nuclear weaponization/delivery programs started by his father. how he responds to the present crisis will tell us more about him than anything previously has.

The point is they'd just claim they are "tests" designed to splashdown harmlessly a hundred miles from the island, and if we shoot them down and succeed then we are the provocateurs, and if we try to shoot them down and fail then we look weak on the world stage.

that doesn't appear to be the point at all, but rather more of their typical brinkmanship. their nuclear deterrent forestalls any preemptive military action against them allowing them to posture and threaten to their hearts' content to try and gain concessions, while bolstering internal propaganda campaigns, so long as they don't actually shoot first.
