I was assuming it would begin with a US preemptive strike. If Kim went first, yeah you could definitely get into the millions (with nukes, all things are possible).

No one wins in a battle against NK. They're already living in an incredibly miserable society. What would being at war do to them? Justify their misery? What defines a victory in that war, permanent territory occupation?

Meanwhile, South Korea would suffer. Our soldiers would suffer. China would be pissed. Everyone else would be pissed. Trump would have a hardon assuming he wasn't vaporized by a NK nuke.

the long-term geopolitical goal remains a reunification of the Korean peninsula under the democratic regime in Seoul.

it would be shall we say problematic given the disparity in development and the indoctrination of the North's citizenry but it would be the endpoint of any successful war.

or rather i should say the beginning of that process would be the endpoint of any successful war. reintegrating the North into Korea and the wider world will take years, decades.

Trump ramps up sanctions against North Korea, and in more significant and effectual news it appears the Chinese are actually complying with the earlier U.N. sanctions against the regime. given China's status as by far North Korea's largest trading partner (as large as all their other trading partners combined) it represents unprecedented economic pressure against the regime.

The White House, in a statement, later said North Korea’s energy, medical, mining, textiles and transportation industries were among those targeted and that the U.S. Treasury could sanction anyone who owns, controls or operates a port of entry in North Korea.

Four sources earlier told Reuters that China’s central bank has told banks to strictly implement United Nations sanctions against North Korea.

I don't wanna sound too pessimistic, but I kinda think that KJU would rather go out in a desperate war than comply and do as he's told. Sometimes I just wonder how far we are from each man's breaking point :I

Kim has every reason to believe that his nuclear program is the only thing keeping in power, perhaps the only thing keeping him alive. In the face of that, is there any amount of sanctioning that will have the desired outcome?

he'll never give up his fission baubles no but he may stop firing missiles over Japan and threatening to fire them at Guam and testing ever larger bombs underground and aggressively pursuing ICBM development that would allow him to hit the States. him engaging in a series of escalating brinksmanship displays has led us to this present crisis and if he would just shut up in his little kingdom and clutch his nukes tightly to his chest there would regularly be public outcry but no real possibility of military conflict or the kind of China+U.N.-sanctioned sanctions that can so disrupt his economy.

whether or not sanctions will induce him to take a less aggressive posture, we shall see.

Indeed. It's now the top trending hashtag on Twitter in the US lol. I was plenty aware of the adjective "dotty" but didn't recall the noun dotard. Wasn't sure if it was a mistranslation of the Korean or not.

    Dotard, because

    a) it's accurate
    b) it's a fantastic word that nobody uses anymore
    c) it also works as shorthand for calling him "Donald, the retard"
