with the exception of the psychopath Assad North Korea is the worst regime on earth and my skepticism is profound, but this is potentially a watershed moment. the son is not the father, as the father was not the grandfather, and such an unprecedented diplomatic overture to the South suggests at least the possibility of normalizing relations. it has been lost a bit in the fire and the fury but North Korea is in an appallingly weak geopolitical position following their great protector China not only withdrawing their strategic umbrella from them but also joining with the West in economic sanctions.

despite the fact that they can now nuke Seoul and Tokyo North Korea has never been more isolated on the international stage, they have never been more susceptible to economic leverage, and they have never been more vulnerable to international pressure. without China they cannot sustain their society and they have only the capacity to destroy others as they themselves fall. it appears that fate is not appealing to the pudgy Kim. but we shall see how far the man and his society are capable of changing even for the sake of self-preservation.

i absolutely do not trust the North Koreans, but for the first time since their development the Koreas have made a joint statement that denuclearization of the peninsula is their stated goal, that they desire to turn the 1953 armistice into a permanent peace treaty, that they are establishing a new liaison office in Kaesong, and that President Moon is going to visit Pyongyang this Fall. the visit has gone as well as anyone could have hoped for, and if even half of what is promised is achieved Nobel Peace Prizes should be tossed about like confetti.
