they've lost 5 of the last 6 presidential elections in popular vote count and only backlash against Obama's spending gave them the House in 2010, prior to that they had lost both chambers in 2006, and in 2012 though they retained their House majority it shrunk and they only did it through gerrymandering as they lost the popular vote count in that as well, while losing additional Senate seats, all against a backdrop of 8% unemployment, anemic growth, and wretched national financials

they're losing most of the elections, and losing them consistently. if the demographics shift that are occurring continue to occur and anti-gerrymandering efforts begin to achieve results, as they currently are in California for example, their problems will only intensify

It's a long article, but blaming this (100% purely) on gerrymandering (the deliberate redistricting to benefit one party) would be false. Polarization of districts is increasing even without the borders of the district changing.

A better way to put it is that while it's not always a case of explicit gerrymandering the inherently flawed nature of how we allocate districts and representatives is the reason they're able to maintain as much influence as they do.

I suppose it can be argued that it's not just the gerrymandering, but I don't think it can be argued against that without the gerrymandering they lose.
