While 28 weeks is certainly viable for premature birth it seems that by the time the mother was treated it would have been too late.

There's no real detail on just how sudden her death was but it's likely that by the time they stopped trying to resuscitate her an emergency c-section would have been a pointless effort.

Make them pay taxes and obey the law like everyone else if they're going to hide behind their religion. You can't just cry "omg against my religion" with laws and then use the laws to benefit your group when it contradicts your beliefs. Obviously, you can. The church could've easily told the lawyers not to make the "fetus isn't worthy of legal protection" argument and tried to win the case another way.
