And to that, I repeat: what "position" could be better? They don't even have to build or maintain their military. The minute anyone looks at them funny, the U.S. will sweep in and carpet bomb the shit out of the entire region, simply because "the Bible said so." Other Christian nations will follow.

Fighting for eons? Sure they had quite a bit of trouble in Europe but in the middle east at least they got along almost perfectly fine with everyone else. They became famous poets, doctors, and even grand viziers. Barring idiots in Europe popping in during the crusades(of which said group was mostly comprised of criminals and psychopathic teenage royalty the Europeans didn't want near them) Muslims, Jews, and Christians never really had the historical (and mythological)enmity you hear spoken of so often.

You can be far more aggressive and expand into territories that are contested when you have the most powerful military on the planet ready to assist at any time.

You would be surprised how many countries have pretty good air forces. Iraq did before the first Gulf War and even for a bit after since most of their pilots bailed with the planes as the war started.

The first strike portion of the Gulf War had 300 planes in the air simultaneously. It doesn't happen often, but it is useful if you need to decimate something quickly and efficiently. Like if we were to ever have to go after N Korea...our only chance of Seoul surviving would be to simultaneously hit every piece of artillery on the border as well as any missile capabilities they may have.

This is exactly the point. Mandatory military service might as well exist simply to keep the population in shape. They have the most powerful military on the planet waiting to nuke the ever-loving piss out of anyone who so much as spits within range of their capital, and that this "support" is more rooted in religious foundations than through a true alliance of interests (unless the U.S. suddenly loves ethnic cleansing and the oppression of neighbors) or through military gains.

Case-in-point: you think North Korea is batshit insane right now? Imagine if they had us backing up each of their bloated statements with missiles at the read. Poor South Korea would have either given up or ceased to exist by now.
