As someone who found themselves in the same situation can someone explain why I need two swords? Surely the monster sword could pull double duty.

The silver swords in the Witcher are actually regular steal swords coated with silver, because silver by itself would be too brittle to function as a sword. By the same logic, the silver coated wouldn't hold up over time if they used it constantly, so it's reserved only for fighting monsters.

That's not how the gameplay mechanics work (obviously the silver swords should just fine against humans), but that's at least the lore explanation for it.

And as AG said, honestly just skip 1. Go read a synopsis of it so you can understand the references and call backs in the later games, but I wouldn't actually bother playing it at this point.

2 is still a dope ass game, and honestly for what it was at the time I preferred it to 3.

Co-signing skip 1 and just play 2 and 3. The gameplay in 1 is just not good at all even if the worldbuilding and story are great.

I tried playing 1 a few years back but gave up right near the beginning in the castle area. I’m not a natural user of keyboard controls so I sucked balls, give me the ability to use a controller and I would have continued playing.

I can understand skipping the first game, but I ended up finishing it and I am glad I did. I was able to have an attachment to some of the key characters who show up in later games (or those who end up dying) or setting up the romance between Geralt and Triss for the third game. Hell if I didn't play the first game I do not think I would even know who Shani even was when she shows up in the third games missions, same could be said for Thaler as well.

TL;DR If your a sucker for lore and knowing characters, push on thru the Witcher 1 at least once then move on to the better games.

It depends on how much knowledge of the books you have. I like it going off only spending the most time with the third game, but those who read the books are trashing it.

I’m not surprised at all though that bookfans are wearing their top hats and monocles over it. Just remember how insufferable the first few seasons of GoT was with the AksHuaLy critics.

good to see, everything in the games screams how devoted to and influenced by Sapkowski's work and aesthetics and artistic ethos the CDPR bros were, and indeed more than once during the show i thought to myself the games don't even cover the story he told and somehow they're still more faithful to him than this direct adaptation.

I've owned Witcher 2 forever and now after watching the show, I really want to play the games. I bought W3 a few days ago since it was on sale.

I started watching a Let's Play for W1, and I do not see what people dislike about the combat yet. Then again, I'm not playing, so maybe it is something you must experience first-hand. There is a lot to take in though...

edit: I need to find a guide on how to load mods into the "Vortex" client.

The controls of 1 & 2 put me off immediately. 3 I felt played better, but I still get frustrated.

The combat in 1+2 is comically bad. It's unfathomable that a great game otherwise would ship with those controls.

It's like MGS1 vs the rest of the series but 3x worse.

Vortex is a lil complicated but p simple once you get the ropes, you'll find a million tutorials on youtube how to manage it.



you can also just manually install mods in your Witcher 3 directory in the 'Mods' folder and the folder is partitioned from the main game so there's no danger of overwriting anything critical. there's also a dedicated Witcher 3 mod manager in beta which is p similar to Vortex but a lot of witcherers prefer it. https://www.nexusmods.com/witcher3/mods/2678

godspeed on the path modding Witcher 3 can become addicting. forget how many dozens i eventually loaded 2 and 3 with.
