Anyone else just going to walk out that Friday and try to buy one? I forgot to pre-order and I doubt any places have any more systems ready.

Anyone happen to work at a target and know the ratio of consoles to games? I'd love to get in on that b2g1 free action but I see them selling out quickly. Also are they doing a midnight opening for it?

Just thought I'd throw that in there.

Pretty sure it wont play ps3 games because they dont want it to. Idk tho.
So I've been wondering about the backwards compatibility stuff...

Does anybody (tech people?) know why they don't want to do it so much?

Like ps3 originally came with ps2 hardware, then software, then nothing at all for ps2 games.

Why phase it out like that?

And then, of course, you'd think ps3/2/1 backwards compatibility would be a huge selling point, but it seems like they'd rather save money.

Like... how much can it possibly cost to be able to read fucking cd's lol >.> I don't think outside of this I've ever seen a blu-ray or dvd drive that's incapable of reading cd's.

Is it really possible that they're doing this to avoid costs you'd probably measure in cents per unit?

It seems especially odd given that they were selling ps3 at a loss initially, with a meaningful amount of extra hardware in the emotion chips.

I asked that a while ago and got a bunch of answers about CPU architectures that went over my head.

    1) emulation is really hard on the CPU so yeah

    2) they got a genkai association so of course they want to sell that shit to users

Its extra costs period, and as a big company they want to cut costs and still encourage people to pay big prices to play new games. Backwards comparability goes against all that.

It's still something people want though, so to fill the need and still profit by it the big 3 have moved onto emulation, catch being you have to rebuy digital versions of the games you already own (gaikai, downloading games on xone, idk what wiiu does). Its all a shitty practice but ce la vie.

Backwards compatibility is a weird argument. I understand it. I have a shitty back catalog of PS2 and PSP games that I never even think about since I got a PS3 and a Vita. 100% of all of the PS3 trades I've taken that are BC, the customer says they never used it in the 6-7 years owning it and bought it with the intention. Yet, we burn through the BC systems first (and don't even sell/have PS2 games). Everyone bitches that the PS4/Xbox1 are not BC. But every game they reserve/want/ask about, is for the next generation.

I still play PS1 games on my PS2 to this day. Working my way through FF: Tactics atm. If I ever get around to buying a PS3 for cheap I'll make sure it's a BC one.

That being said I actually understand the PS4 having no PS3 BC because the PS3 was bitch of a machine to develop for and having the physical hardware the run PS3 games in the PS4 would not be cost effective at all.

However, (and feel free to correct me on this, as I don't know anything about it) I don't quite understand why it would be so hard to make it so that if you own a physical copy of a game from systems that are easy to emulate (PS1 and PS2), to make it so that you can just download the game from the disc instead of having to rebuy it from PSN. Assuming it has the hardware to read the media, which PS4 apparently doesn't for ps1 games. Though you can't expect me to believe that it's expensive for them to make it able to read cds.

Antipiracy people hate this idea. In there eyes you'll just download an iso and get a free legit game on their bandwidth for it.

Well a major current gen only as of now game in High demand is GTA V. I am waiting for it to release on PC, so I am not in that category. But games like Gran Turismo 6, Lightning Returns, Kingdom Hearts HD Remix, Last of Us, Armored Core, and others I can't think of that are current gen only really urk me. I sold my 360 and never owned a PS3. I do not want to buy one just to play those games at the same time I am buying the PS4. It just doesnt make sense to do so from my point of view.

I understand they would make more money to get me to buy both consoles. BUT, I wont do that. So in the end, they are losing the revenue anyway from me not buying the games at all.

My boyfriend works at Target and he said different stores could be getting different stock/events. His store is totally sold out of PS4 pre order cards but have plenty of XBOX one orders left (lol). There will be plenty of games. He said his store is unlikely to do a midnight launch because when they've tried to do launches before (granted these were for games), no one ever showed up!

They're getting you to buy a ps4, which means you're a customer for the next decade plus when gaikai is released you'll end up buying those games at a higher margin then if you bought at GameStop (they make full profit instead of just royalties). Its win win for them.

That is based on the assumption that I have internet that is capable of streaming or even like Gaikai. I don't buy used games.

I also believe that Gaikai, like everything, will get pushed back into the nether realm of neverternity© release or be buggy as fuck when it comes out.

But you do have a point. I personally would prefer to play a game off my hard drive or physical disc than to stream it.
