Just says games won't be, no real detail given.

Not surprising, but I'm still disappointed...I thought PSN purchases may work on the PS4 because of the PS Vita being able to share PSN purchases with the PS3.
I can understand no backwards compatability w/ games via disc. But I don't understand why PSN games won't be able to work on the ps4. Even if not at launch they need to make that happen. Makes no sense why they are going to isolate nearly everything on the PSN store, seems counter intuitive. I mean the ps3 can do ps2/1 games even
I see no reason to jump to a PS4 yet.
Ugh, thats stupid as fuck. They need to make all PSN shit crossover into the new system or I'm sticking with my PS3 for a while.
How does that surprise anyone? They aren't doing software emulation to make disc based games that run on the Cell architecture work, so why would PSN games running on Cell architecture be any different?
It makes perfect sense for why they won't crossover, but it still sucks ass. Hopefully Sony does something so PS3 owners don't feel like they're getting screwed by upgrading to PS4
And as somebody who doesn't own a ps3 but wanted a ps4 so I could take advantage of an entire playstation library, this is pretty crappy news.
Apparently the PSN purchases thing is being reported differently from different outlets. Polygon has Sony saying that they can honor PSN purchases through the cloud.
PS4 may support existing digital purchases through cloud, 'We could do so if we choose to,' says Sony
PlayStation 4 will not natively support PlayStation 3 games, including downloadable PlayStation Network games, said Shuhei Yoshida, president of Sony Worldwide Studios during a roundtable interview today. The absence of native compatibility means Sony will need to explore other alternatives for playing current-gen software.
"Unless, somehow, some games work on emulation," Yoshida acknowledged. "The easiest thing, technically, would be to make PS1 games work on PS4 with emulation, but we are not talking about our emulation plans as yet." PS1 games currently run through emulation on the PlayStation 3 as well as the PlayStation Vita while PlayStation 2 software has no such emulation available.
"So there are two ways, emulation or cloud services. But native support, no. Sorry," Yoshida said. "No backwards compatibility. You can quote me on that," he said, acknowledging the headline-worthiness of the quote.
When asked if the aforementioned "cloud services" could work with your existing PSN library, recognizing your previous purchases and making those experiences available on the otherwise-incompatible PS4, Yoshida said, "We could do so if we choose to. We know who purchased what as a record. But we are working on service plans and we haven't decided."
Retail PS3 games won't run natively on PS4, said Gaikai CEO David Perry during yesterday's unveiling of the new console, when he introduced its cloud gaming capabilities.
This is likely due to the significant differences in the design of the hardware between PS3 and PS4. The former featured a custom-built Cell processor with unique hardware architecture that was reportedly difficult for developers to grasp; the latter will include an x86 processor that is expected to bear a closer resemblance to current PC hardware, said lead architect Mark Cerny.
Perry did say that Sony wants to eventually make the PS4 backward-compatible with PS1, PS2 and PS3 games through Gaikai-based streaming, but implied that that functionality will not be available anytime soon.
Sounds like they would make PSN purchases for your PSP/Vita still be downloadable via the PS4, but anything that requires full backwards compatability will otherwise have to be streamed via Gaikai.
Of course if they don't do this then Sony is fucking retarded.
Meh console just keeps proving its inferiority to PC. Stuff like this highlights that big time. Sony can find a way to make it work but if it's not profitable then they're not gonna try hard enough. And since supporting you for already buying stuff is pretty far from profitable, they're not even gonna touch it. Headliner indeed.
Just buy a frickin' PC.
Guy, I have a gaming PC, but that argument is stupid. Not all games are found on PC. Consoles will never match a PC for ease of access and power, but I'll continue being a console gamer because I enjoy console only games.

I didn't see this mentioned but PS4 will be bundled with a headset, cross game chat is also confirmed.
Spoiler: show
That is good to hear, was wondering after all the talk of auto downloads and social stuff. The PlayStation 4 does not need to be constantly connected to the internet, president of Sony Worldwide Studios Shuhei Yoshida told Eurogamer following Sony's conference yesterday. The PS4's internet settings are fully customizable, whether someone is concerned about data limits or simply wants to be left alone.
"Oh yes, yes, you can go offline totally," Yoshida said. "Social is big for us, but we understand there are some people who are anti-social. So if you don't want to connect to anyone else, you can do that."
The PS4 has a secondary custom chip that allows users to play games as those games are downloading, and Yoshida said the PS4 will have a low-power mode where the main system is asleep but the subsystem is awake, downloading or uploading content.
Players will be able to wake up the PS4 via tablets, smartphones or with the Vita, Yoshida further explained. The Vita will be able to play PS4 games remotely, with the goal of all games using remote play functionality.
Hopefully the low power mode will also allow controllers to be charged while the system is off.
If I buy a console, I may just wait for Valve's "console" and say so long to Wii U, Xbox 720 and PS4.
