Ok, I didn't see his age. That one is cleared up now.

The point of the STPP comment is that it is inserted into the story where it will reinforce the bias of the parents. I know what the trend is.

The original story was published by the parents....of course they are going to tell the media that their son is innocent. There are many other reasons to look at this with a grain of salt.

I personally know several people with autism in various forms and work with kids age 7-10 with everything from slight Asperger Syndrome that is barely diagnosable to severe Rett Syndrome where the child cannot do something as simple as walk across the room without physical guidance. There is nothing in the story that tells where this kid lies on that spectrum. Until we get more details, we could just as easily assume that this child is indeed selling his prescriptions. Just because the kid has no friends (again, according to the parents who are trying their hardest to connect dots that have no correlation) does not mean he is innocent. Also, it appears he was arrested while in a classroom with other mainstream students. That tells me his "illness" is not near as severe as the parents inferred.

Just remember that mental illness does not equal innocence or victimization. Wait for some facts instead of getting indignant over a story written by the parents of a child that was arrested in connection with a drug bust. They cannot and will not tell the story objectively. It appears that the judge in this case did look at all the facts and dismissed the charges. Now let's see what the school district does.

P.S. I am not saying this kid wasn't wronged. I am pointing out that the bias in the story is sickening. Just look at the descriptions of zero tolerance and the "STPP".........really?
Regardless of where the kid is on the spectrum, Autism is a social disorder. He'll have trouble with being able to identify when someone is being untoward to him.

The UC should have known better than to target him but the parents are also to blame for not checking out who this new friend was, 59 messages, cmon.

really? the idea of getting an autistic kid to sell his meds to a uc and immediately expelling him doesn't sound at all to you like a school trying to pawn off difficult students into the judicial system so that someone else has to be responsible?

I agree completely. The UC fucked up. I can see one of the autistic kids that I know (Kid being 16) getting caught up in something like this. He has impulsive tendencies and very little cognizance of right and wrong when his impulse kicks in. He would have no problem, say, selling drugs for someone that hands them to him and tells him to sell them.

The fact that the cop even had the terrible presence of mind to include this kid without doing a proper background look shows what kind of cop he is.

Real cops would never just go "oh he has meds he must be in on it". Sounds like Eager Beaver syndrome to me.

With the shit I've seen I doubt it was even that as much as "oh he has meds I bet we can get him in on it."

Wish it was easier to follow these stories over the years. I want to see how big a pay out these people get, and I want to see all the public apologies and resignations over this.

Wonder how much they're getting on the back end from the private prisons they're serving.
Lots, and this is what the wealthy want: the "peace of mind" knowing that there's one less minority and disabled person to potentially inconvenience them, and the "justification" to praise their other wealthy friends who are in charge of these... institutions.

or did he have some of his RX meds on him?
Why would that ever be an issue? I took meds in the middle of class practically every day in HS.

At a lot of schools now you have to turn your meds (even shit like tylenol and cough drops) over to the school nurse and only they can distribute them.

    It's pretty retarded.

^ It was always like that for me, at least until High School. I had ADHD and every day I would go to the nurse's office to pick up my pill (most days of which I wouldn't take it, as I learned to despise pills in any form as a youth).

Sister in law had to turn over pain meds to the nurse, who called every time to verify, even though she has major surgery.

    Country is being dumber, folks.

As someone on the autism spectrum, I have to say it's a miracle I managed to get out of the public education system with my sanity. I'm fine now, but that shit should not have flown. I had one special education teacher who spent the entire period smoking and talking on her cell phone while her aid was forced to teach me.

I once won a special ed scholarship because I wrote an essay bitching out all the problems with the system and how they were all terrible people who should die in a fire. Like how you should actually be a NORMAL teacher for at least 5 years before even setting foot in a special education classroom.

And people wonder why I laugh when I hear about teachers striking.

    Where teachers involved here?
only three people within the district knew about the undercover operation while it was occurring, the Board President, the Superintendent, and the Director of Child Welfare and Attendance.
