Gonna be a lot of backlash on this one. How dare he say you don't need the church to get to heaven. Wasn't that the plot of Stigmata, buried books of the bible that basically said be a good person and you'll be rewarded so it freaked out the Vatican?
Honestly, what he said always struck me as common sense and one of the reasons I had a problem with organized religions. If God is such a loving and compassionate being, me being a good person and not intentionally causing harm should be more than enough for him.
Universalist Church of America
Sup.
FUCK YEAH WE GOIN TO HEAVEN
1. See my post above about purgatory
2. It would be counterintuitive to say "don't judge" then judge where atheists would go.
I look at it as, all good people have the chance to go to purgatory/heaven, but which is up to God, and we shouldn't just assume what he will decide. The big thing I would say, is not that they instantly get to heaven, but that being atheist is not an instant ticket to hell.
I always found it concerning that for a branch of a faith that says there's only one way to the afterlife, that they say that it's flexible
for the sake of argument and if there is indeed only "one way" it's pretty messed up to have a bunch of people thinking they're all gonna be fine
who cares what the beliefs of a group are, I always look at it like "if you're gonna do, do it right," but hey that's just me
Catholic church has had it wrong since the 16th century anyways. Nothing to see here.
I wonder if anyone could possibly have predicted that no matter what he does or says, people are going to find ways to get pissed off about it.
No way, right?
The Catholic doctrine has been pretty adamant about not assuming what it takes to get into heaven outside of telling people to do their best to be "good". Of course, not all catholics (including the higher ups) practice that.
I have had a lot of issues involving catholicism, but it's mostly centered around what people do with it, vs. what the doctrine says (not to say that I am 100% happy with the doctrine either, just it's rather close to what I believe).
For me, I don't get upset about people reacting negatively against what he says. I am more upset with the catholic history/modern day that caused people to react this way in the first place.
This is a good step in trying to show people what Catholicism is really supposed to be about. But, it is admittedly a small step in a very steep mountain that we created.
Heaven != clouds, Heaven = New Jerusalem (a new City according to Revelation/End Times). You don't die and go to heaven, you die, stay dead, rise up in the end zombie-like and if ye be judged rightly, ye be invited into the New City/Heaven.
Enjoy looking for afterlife-parking.
In other news on my Facebook I read from a family member that allowing gays in the scouts will increase the incidence of child molestation.
Continue.
Well, if you consider every man-on-boy child molester as "gay", then ipso facto you're right.
But yes that's an incredibly unsophisticated worldview.
this was the first thing that came to my mind. i have to say hes either going to end up being excommunicated, or successfully overhaul the catholic church/belief system. people forget that when jesus supposedly sacrificed himself to absolve us of sin, there were only 12 christians. yet he supposedly died for everybody. So the pope is technically right, even if it doesn't mean potential heaven for atheists. christians for the most part believe Heaven is an exclusive club that you have to buy the membership for before you die.
