You see though, that shouldn't be legal. You shouldn't be allowed to report libelous or false stories for the sake of entertainment, profit, or sensationalism. They should be held accountable for the consequences of reporting what hasn't been proven (unless they specifically state there is no evidence).

Reporting things like "OBAMA POSSIBLY NOT CITIZEN" just for the sake of getting shitty redneck viewers without regard for consequence is incredibly irresponsible (not to mention unethical).

Ah the days of Yellow Journalism and when it was actually frowned upon.

They've also hit like a 12 year low in ratings.

That is true, but that's because people just don't watch news much anymore. I would imagine their website gets a ton of traffic and then the rest is people talking to each other and spreading the panic. I was at the mechanic today and he had it on in the waiting room. Little old lady getting her oil changed kept gasping at stuff they said and was staring at the tv with her mouth open the whole time.

Not just news, either. TV viewership in general has been steadily dropping as people get more of their entertainment online. TV ratings are drastically skewed in favor of demographics that still watch a lot of TV. Networks see this and focus on programming aimed at those "core" demographics, which pushes everyone else further away, resulting in a positive feedback loop.

Yeah, Maddow actually started occasionally outperforming O'Reilly in younger viewers (not total, though, not even remotely close) around the election. They're not the same time slot, though, and if they were she'd probably still get crushed even in younger viewers.
