If boxes are marked/paid to be handled differently, then you shouldn't expect them to be. I don't know about FedEx or UPS, but I know USPS has those options. Regardless, a lot of ire towards delivery people/carriers should instead be directed at their superiors. USPS treats its employees like absolute shit and is currently in the process of getting rid of most of its regulars because their pay scale is higher than what the new regulars would get paid...and in addition to that they have what basically amounts to temporary positions (though they are careers) that they can just fire whenever they want. They go through a ton of new employees because it is extremely mismanaged. The regular carriers get their 8 hours or so, but most of them aren't able to take overtime because of how much they would get paid. The overtime goes to the new people only and some places they are out until 2000 each night. If you were thinking that you didn't have an education and wanted to just have a decent job, it's not worth the 15$/h.

So what? I don't care about their life story, toils and troubles at work or anything else, none of that is an excuse for throwing around packages that people have paid in good faith to be delivered and treated with care. They're paid to do a job and provide a service, they know that full well when they sign on. Glad she got fired, if she treats small boxes - full of paperwork or not - with such a lack of care, it's highly unlikely that this kind of person would give any less of a crap if it was a fragile package or otherwise. Look at the state of the back of that van, it's pure laziness, they just didn't want to deal with organising any of that shit or putting it back in place.

Never, ever look inside a UPS then. I've worked at a UPS hub for over five years, and if you're very, very lucky, the worst thing that happens to your package is it gets thrown. And that doesn't even have anything to do with the hourly employees. The building is too old for the number of packages it processes, and they end up being squished together, a box with one shirt in it and a fifty pound box of bolts just being shoved together by a conveyor belt made to move thousands of pounds at a time. I've seen cases of DVDS, clothes, porn, copier paper, bottled water, and a wide variety of all other things ripped open and their contents spread all over without the aid of disgruntled employees. The shipping industry operates to facilitate sheer volume of packages, not individual package service. These videos and gifs of FedEx, UPS and USPS employees mishandling packages is a symptom of the corporate attitude, not personal malaise. Package car drivers in my facility are expected to work twelve hour days, and there are no signs of them getting more drivers, despite the burden placed on the current ones. UPS is posting record profits year after year, and they refuse to increase the numbers of full time employees to cover the increase in business.

I work in an outdated facility, which is essentially open to the elements, uses poorly maintained equipment, worked by poorly trained and uncared for employees. Management give us as few people as possible to do the work, and then get angry when the work isn't getting done quickly enough. Management give us as few people as possible to do the work, and then get angry when the work isn't getting done quickly enough.
