From what I have read about it, I don't think they are going retroactive and getting rid of the old online passes (or reimbursing people for them if they already bought them) but they have dumped the system for the future. Too much bad pub.

On the PSN side of things, they just made the online passes free to obtain yesterday. Probably easier than trying to retroactively patch all the existing games to just skip the check.
