This is actually quite a good question: a lot of people here hate the requirement in principal, not because of any actual deleterious effect of the act of periodically authorizing. If there's a real negative that you can articulate, please do.

Tyche so far is the only person that has actually risen to the challenge: he's concerned that it will be used as a method to restrict casual game lending. But as I pointed out, the real thing that people should hating on is restrictions on casual game lending (if MS actually attempts to do that--so far they haven't said much about it publicly and what they have said is confusing), not the mechanic by which it accomplishes that.

No, it's actually a terrible question which has been asked on moved goalposts. Your original question did not account that you were consistently online with respect to Microsoft's service. Tyche cited Just Dance, a game that does not require consistent network connection. If a game is in no way programmed to take advantage of a network (and DLC does not count for this), then why does a user need to phone home in order to play it?

Furthermore, you attempted to ask the question in a situation where the stars aligned. Constant internet uptime. Constant connection to Microsoft's systems. Life is not that ideal. ISPs do experience outages. The US' internet infrastructure is improving, but it is still a shithole compared to SEA. If you can't route to Microsoft's authentication server, have fun with your brick. If you're in Buttfuck Egypt, why drop $500 just to roll dice to see if you can authenticate?

Your argument also fails to account for the authorization servers become a weak point in regards to the entire system. If the authorization servers are offline at any point, the system is down. This paints a very large target on Microsoft's back. Even worse than when Sony was taken down a few pegs a year or so ago when they had breaches across the board. Now you can sit there and lazily posture that Microsoft's services won't go down, but in my line of work, you always prepare for worst case scenarios such as this. And considering at least one person has already worked his way into Microsoft's developer system to order himself dev consoles, I'm not too keen on their security.

P.S. "Fuck you, I got mine" is a terrible position to argue from.

To really dumb it down, it's because we will be forced to do so. Microsoft has basically said you will do this or you will not be able to play your 500 dollar console. There is no flexibility. There is no leeway. No concern for customers who are unable to meet these requirements. Not everyone is as well informed as we are in regards to the system and what it will entail. What happens to the 9 year old kid in Assfuck, Montana who has no internet connection that has his parents buy the console only to find he can't use it? Haha too bad sorry about your luck, enjoy your paperweight. MS has made it an all or nothing venture. Play by our rules or don't play at all. That type of attitude doesn't fly with the vast majority of the world. In most cases when someone says you must do it this way and offers no reasonable excuse as to why, people tend to do the exact opposite.

Take into account that the console and Kinect are "always on." Now add on top of that the fact that you have to connect once a day to validate your system and it feels like consumers are being treated like they're criminals. With the revelation that MS was in collusion with the NSA to allow them to monitor civilian communications and infringe upon the public's civil liberties how could this not be a huge point of concern for the public? I might be having a tinfoil hat moment but giving a company constant access to what I'm doing when they have an established track record of allowing third parties to monitor it is simply something I am not comfortable doing.

Exactly what benefit does "phoning home" have? None.
