I don't think there's any sort of parent account nonsense. If any family member buys/authenticates a game, the other accounts (regardless of system) can then "borrow" the games. But any and all accounts still function individually and can purchase their own games too.

One that could have been said weeks ago.

"Game discs will lock to specific Xbox consoles and upload to the cloud. From there, you can designate up to 10 friends to share the game with without ever turning over the disc. They simply turn on their console and access your library, only condition being only one person can play at a time. Your friend lives 3000 miles away? No problem, welcome to the future!"

How much more awesome does that sound over what was said? Marketing, it's hard.

That's what's making me cautious about it, if the system is that lax why haven't they been reassuring people over it. Gonna have to wait and see for more solid confirmation, but it's great if true.

Didn't marketing/PR used to be MS's strong point? What happened?

Sounds like Microsoft (and publishers) will lose out on substantially more money than Sony. Groups will be created on forums (just like ours) to join up. We can all get free games from each other. Each person on the list buy 1 game, and everyone else gets access to it. $60 each (or less), for access to 11 games per person. Rinse and repeat.

Most games are sold once or twice.... no where near 11 times.

Pretty good explanation of why the DRM exists from Reddit. I'm sure it won't be enough for most people but it at least gives a much better perspective than what MS have fed us:
I think some people have missed the explanation for why MS has the used game policy and online check in. Frankly, they did a bad job explaining it but the reason is that Xbox One is essentially a pure digital distribution model retrofitted to comply with the current console disc distribution model. Basically:

    • On PS4, you can buy a game disc and even if you "install" game assets to the HDD the system will require the disc to play. You can also download a game directly and this will not require a disc to play.
    • On Xbox One, all games are installed to the HDD and no longer require a disc to play. All games will also be available for download (like on Steam). The disc is merely a shortcut versus downloading if you don't have the bandwidth.
    • The Xbox One is setup this way to allow seamless switching between games and other entertainment without swapping discs.

So why is there a used game policy/online check in on the Xbox but not the PS4?
Imagine a scenario where the Xbox One does not have this protection. I can then buy a game, install it, and then give it to two friends who also install it. Now all of us can play because a disc is not required beyond the installation and 1 $60 game can be used simultaneously by a virtually unlimited number of people. The online check makes sure that for a single game license, the account who is authorized to play this game is the only one playing it.
With the PS4, if I have a game on disc then I need that disc to play - by exchanging the disc with someone else they can now play but I cannot so sharing is a moot point. With the PS4, if I have direct download game I cannot share it so drm is a moot point here. However, the xbox does not make a distinction between a downloaded game and a disc based game (because they are really one and the same after installation) so it needs to check regardless. I suspect that if and when the Xbox goes to pure digital distribution (like steam), they will be able to do away with the online checks
I have heard some rumblings that unlike the PS4, you can share an owned game with someone else and play simultaneously if they are part of your family. I'm not sure about the details on this.
The only major downside to this setup is that I cannot take a disc to a friends house and show them the new game I got unless I install it on their Xbox HDD AND log-in under my account. The other potential downside is you have to connect to the internet every 24 hours, but for me and most people i know it is not an issue.
tl;dr: Think of the Xbox One like Steam but with discs available to expedite installation. DRM is required to make sure people don't use the same installation discs to play concurrently without paying for additional licenses.
It's still a pretty bum deal, but necessary protection for the model they're aiming at.

My only issue with the fact that games have to be installed is that each of them this gen will be around 20-25GB right? That makes a 500GB HDD run out very fast together with downloads and other things.

Also, MS's marketing sucks, these explanations make a lot more sense. Question remains is whether or not they're true and correct.

While not as free as that family model, the PSN is kinda like iTunes in that you can register 5 devices to DL to which can also also be used simultaneously (just not signed in as the same psn account). Take for example, I downloaded borderlands to my ps3, then let my nephew sign in on my account to dl to his ps3. He then switches back to his account (which is a sub-account of mine I should note) and we are able to play the game multiplayer on 2 different ps3's.

Yeah, PSN has done this for awhile, but you have to give out your password. It's great, but MS is doing it better if it works how it was explained.

Agreed, just thought I'd point out the error in that, that the playstation isn't able share with family. (although, as you pointed out, with the PSN it'd better be family/friends you trust since they need your password)

While the Internet is decidedly up in arms about the way the Xbox One handles game ownership and online check-ins, Mehdi said it was "hard to say" what the larger reaction from the less attentive mainstream consumers would be. "I think it's fair to say there's a segment of consumers at this show in particular who really pay attention, who are very passionate about all aspects of gaming, and that we listen to closely. In a broader set of community, people don't pay attention to a lot of the details. We've seen it in the research, we've seen it in a lot of the data points."
Translation: We think mainstream consumers are ignorant and won't notice the inconvenience.

Sarcasm aside, it doesn't seem like the right thing to say regardless.

Sony is giving away Uncharted 3 on PS+... its 40GB... and that is with models/graphics for this generation... not the upcoming one. Take that as you will.

Yea, I have a 1T HD on my ps3 and its almost full My nephews is a 320G and he's gotta delete something everytime he goes to a new game lol
Just makes me question the 500G on the XB1 and why you're not allowed to upgrade it.

Obviously that is what all the discs are for. Since you only get half a gig of storage on the console.

Thats a decent justification for the DRM stuff if its to "future-proof" the console, but I hope that also means cheaper games in the future. Reminds me of when LIVE came out and required broadband internet to play when a lot of people were still on dial-up.

    http://www.egmnow.com/articles/news/...sh-challenges/
A lengthy post on the Major Nelson blog describes how Achievements will work on the Xbox One, and also reveals the existence of “Challenges”—the next-gen evolution of Achievements.

According to Cierra McDonald, program manager for the Xbox Live Achievements service, Xbox Achievements will largely work the same as ever on the Xbox One. As far as your Gamerscore is concerned, only game Achievements will boost said Gamerscore. But now, Achievements can unlock additional content—digital artwork, new maps, characters, and stat boosts, as well as non-gaming content from video and audio apps.

The evolution of Achievements comes in the form of “Challenges,” which McDonald describes as time-sensitive awards that do not contribute to Gamerscore. Previous reports about the Xbox One indicated that there could be cross-title Achievements on Microsoft’s next-gen console. Turns out, only Challenges are cross-title—not Achievements.

“There are now two types of Achievements: achievements and challenges. An achievement is probably already familiar. There’s a goal or activity you must accomplish and a reward that you receive upon completion. You can unlock an achievement at any time, be it on a game’s launch or 3 years later. I guess you can say an achievement is like a promise in that sense,” McDonald described in the post. “A challenge, on the other hand, is more like an opportunity—better grab it while you can! It is also comprised of a goal and a reward; however, challenges are time-bound (as in, real life time). That means you can only unlock during its eligible time window, and if you get close but don’t’ complete the goal when it ends… *Kanye shrug*”

Challenges can also be community-driven. For example, a developer/publisher could design a Challenge in which the collective Call of Duty community needs to attain 1 million head shots in 3 days.

Finally, it’s the Challenges that are adaptive and dynamic, not the Achievements—that is to say, developers and publishers can tailor Challenges in response to observed gaming behavior. Achievements, however, will always remain static—attainable regardless of whether you purchase the game on day one or year two.

This times a 100. How many redundancies do you think MS will have so in the eventuality their server gets attacked, and it will, they can keep things up. They arn't going to sit on a bunch of backup servers since that would cost loads of $$. What about a large scale attack to cripple them out of spite be it DDoS, a virus or even a backdoor where the attackers can leverage the servers to gain information on people authenticating to it. Where is the data being stored from the kinect that constantly datamines you at every second of your life? I'm sure that's being stored on a networked server at some point where it can be broken into and taken by someone skilled enough/bored enough. Explain to your customers that "Sorry you can't play your $500 brick for the next 2 weeks but all our servers are down and we roped ourselves into a corner".

Care to explain why you think it's a dumbass question?
Because it is, the better question is "Why does it require me to always be online in the first place?" Is there any reason short of piracy protection which isn't that huge of a deal for consoles anyways? If Microsoft would come out and say "Hey guys, the real reason we require everyone to be online is because we love you all and need to monitor your health incase you get a kidney stone or a heart attack and then we can send help via the kinect!" it would be a better reason then "GIMMIE ALL DEM MONIES BUWAHAHA" that they sound like right now.

That Windows 7 desktop crash is incredibly intriguing, I want to know more about that now lol.
I would assume all the PS4 live demos during E3 were running on computers also.

Godly if true. Can supposedly share games with up to 10 others even across different systems so long as you set them up as part of your "family". Only stipulation being only one person can be playing it at a time. Would like to see more confirmation if it's true but if it is it should quell at least one of the problems people have.
Reminds me of PS3 game-sharing, except you had more control with that before Sony nerfed it to two authenticated PS3s per account.

It's 2 PS3 systems, and 2 mobile devices last I checked these days. PS4 shouldn't really affect things in that area outside of perhaps PS1/PS2 Classics (if they ever give us client-side emulators for them) since it can't play PS3 games.

That trick also doesn't work for games set up to require the account it was authorized to, to be the one logged in online for play, such as Warhawk.
