Microsoft is willing to change, but not really

Microsoft Studios’ corporate vice president Phil Spencer has said the firm’ 24-hour online authentication and game trading policies on Xbox One are for the moment “definitive” and fixed, but it will remain open-minded regarding future policies.

Speaking in an interview with CVG, Spencer said the firm wanted to make sure its policy isn’t confusing anyone, so it set things in “black and white terms” last week.

“We will be as attentive to that feedback on Xbox One as we were through 360,” he said. “So these systems evolve. We’re a software company. If you think about the amount of times we changed the operating system on 360 – it was a number of times.

“But we wanted to set our policy as it is for Xbox One in clear terms so that there wasn’t ambiguity in what our stance was. That was our intent.”

Spencer went on to say Microsoft was “always listening to its fans,” and even when they get angry and lash out at the firm, he doesn’t take it personally.

“I say this, and I’m not trying to be pithy about it: I’ll never get frustrated with fans of what we do, because they’re very passionate about the games they play and the systems they purchase,” he said.

“We’re obviously trying to build games and a platform that people will love and invest their time and money in.”

The sharing with family idea sounds awesome as hell to bad it's still not enough to sell a system to me. The problem with it is since you can't run the game on two accounts then you can't multiplayer with friends and that sorta limits things down to single player only titles (That seems few and far between on xbox). Also and in the pain in the ass of having to contact another person just to play a single player game seems like a bigger hassle than it's worth. Negative aside it is nice to see it's not all bad coming out of microsoft since this past week I've been worried the whole company may have had a stroke.

Been doing some tin foil hat type thinking, I bet on up the chain higher than the transparency goes, the same fucking dude owns both of the corps, and is just having a feild day setting up this console war and so brilliantly playing the good cop bad cop routine. I wonder how many people are day one PS4 buys now that would have waited a year or two for price to come down on either had they been pretty much same console, same price.

Zero-G/Micro-G would fuck with PS4's heat dissipation, so that wouldn't work.


I would assume all the PS4 live demos during E3 were running on computers also.


Reminds me of PS3 game-sharing, except you had more control with that before Sony nerfed it to two authenticated PS3s per account.


It's 2 PS3 systems, and 2 mobile devices last I checked these days. PS4 shouldn't really affect things in that area outside of perhaps PS1/PS2 Classics (if they ever give us client-side emulators for them) since it can't play PS3 games.

That trick also doesn't work for games set up to require the account it was authorized to, to be the one logged in online for play, such as Warhawk.

Ah, that's unfortunate. I missed that change I guess. Only ever shared split with mine and my nephews/brothers.

It's Reggie saying the used game fiasco is the developer/publisher's fault for not making games people want to spend more than 6 hours playing.

It would say its pretty true about people trading in Nintendo games. Hell Mario 64 DS still gets like 10-15 trade in at Gamestop.

I mean, I guess its also because the MSRP hardly ever goes down.
