It's interesting that some of your arguments are that the gaming market is in trouble. It is bigger than it ever has been, because of consoles. They reach a much broader market than a PC will ever. The vast majority of the public are ignorant when it comes to computers and will freak out at the slightest problem. They will abandon all hope at the first sign of something complicated, even if it isn't really. Go ask your local tech support person how dumb the public is with computers. Once Apple makes a gaming rig, that they support with a store of their own, then console makers should be worried. That is it. It is just too easy for Sony to put out a console that they alone control and monitor, making it safe(er)...easy...fixable from their end...and convenient. They do all that for half of what a normal consumer sees a gaming rig price as (because they damn sure aren't building one)...with what they see as tiny upgrades on the gaming computer's side as far as graphics and modding.

Consoles will be around for a while longer. They will eventually go away, but not anytime soon.

One of the biggest reasons why consoles still exist in this day and age is the simple fact that people are scared of making their computer(s) gaming machines. It was a problem in the 80s, and its a problem now. The second is cost on many levels.

However, this will lead to another eventual video game crash, like in 1983, due to over saturation of crappy games marketed to console warriors.

Yes 90% of us can build a PC that would kick the crap out of a console for under $700, the average person however wont.

edit: in that case lets use how I bought my PS3. Used off Ebay for $100 needed to fix the YLOD; that ran me under $20 seeing as I had the heat gun and thermal paste. Already had a TV. My HDMI ran me $1.50 online and my optic ran around the same.

So id say I win the the cost game against your PC build by a long shot. Anyone on this board most likely could of done what I did.
I completely agree with you! To give a personal situation, a good friend of mine recently bought a laptop and she thought she did her homework and asked all of the right questions when she purchased it. After doing a quick search, I found for $40-$60 more she could've bought other laptops with double the hard drive, more RAM, and a faster processor. I don't blame her because she thought she asked the clerk the right things and he sold her what she bought.

Us having a conversation regarding what's smarter to purchase is a lose/lose for everyone here because we know better regarding this subject. We research, ask tons of questions, and I'd estimate a lot of people here are very much so above average when it comes to technology. The average consumer is not and they will buy what companies market and tell them it's good for them to buy.

    Pretty much.

A console however eliminates this problem. You know that when you purchase a console, you don't have to worry about PC specifications for each game you may want to play on the PC. Nor do you have to worry about getting "a bang for your buck" when it comes to RAM/HDD/Monitor/etc. A console will play every single game that's created for it, including versions of PC games that require higher specs. This is exactly why casual consumers love console games in 2013 if they know it or not.

Consoles exist because they don't run bloated OS's then then run games on top of them. They are standardized all in one boxes which (mainly) have focused on gaming. Microsoft seems to be turning theirs into a DVR/Media focus, that also does gaming this next generation, rather than gaming being the focus. While games can have better graphics on the PC's, most games are developed with console target(s) or lower end pc targets. They don't target the top of the top. (This is where modders come into play).

When everyone has the same specs you can get more power out of the hardware because you know how it will run in all situations. This allows them to better fine tune their games. I believe that if Microsoft does not get their head out of their ass, they are going to be handing the PS4 the largest advantage any console has had at the launch of a console generation. All they have to do is price the console at $399, and collect their money.

As far as "Last console gen should have always been priced at $300". The components at launch in the PS3 were over $500.... I believe Sony was taking a loss on every console sold, so I don't think 300 was feasible in any way.

Consoles and most higher end electronic devices are almost always sold at a loss, the main exception being Apple.

The numbers change generation to generation, but I think in the PS2/Xbox era the consumer had to buy around 6 or 7 games for the system before Sony/MS broke even due to licensing fees and whatnot.

initial cost was around $900, losing $300 every one sold. its standard practice to sell at a loss.

Oh wow, I feel bad that I only bought 6 PS3 games now. If only I had enough motivation to get a job during college then I could have afforded to buy games I wanted to try but wasn't sure were good.

You can't trust my teenage relatives with an ipod, let alone a laptop. The clumsiness of consoles or gaming towers is basically a benefit of them not lugging them around and dropping them. Of course, they'll still spill stupid shit on either. I cringe every time I have to touch the keyboard in the other room because of all the sticky keys and general ickiness they subject the keyboard/mouse to.

Which reminds me, I need to disassemble my wireless keyboard to clean out the hair its accumulated over the past couple years. x.x

"The next Xbox is code-named Durango. And we have talked for a while about this notion that there might be another version of the Xbox that was just aimed at entertainment—a non-gaming device. That device was code-named 'Yumo' and they're not making it. They may make one in the future, but it's not happening this year.

"So the new Xbox that comes out this year will just be the Xbox. And I mentioned before they're also going to sell a new Xbox 360 code-named 'Stingray' that will be $99. And you might look at that as two things: backwards compatibility, obviously, suggesting—I don't actually know this for a fact, but based on the fact that they're making one—I don't think that the new Xbox will play 360 games. But that I don't actually know, that I'm guessing. But, the other one is that, $99, that's a real cool price. And so we know that the Xbox 360 does Netflix, Hulu Plus, yada yada yada, and you can make the argument that's kind of a low cost entertainment device, too.

"Durango is going to be expensive [laughs], you know $500, $300 for the subscription model, that kind of thing, but you know, Blu-ray, blah blah blah, but the thing that interest me, going back and looking at some of the stuff I got a long time ago, it actually says 'must be internet-connected to use' in the notes. And that's all I have, but it does say that.

    [Is that a bad thing?]

"I don't know because I don't know what it means. You know, when you look at some of the stories that were coming out this week about, you know, I saw a headline that said something like 'Next Xbox could be okay without an internet connection for as long as 3 minutes' or something like that. I don't even know what that means, so for me, Xbox 360 is almost entirely an online experience. Most of the games I play are multiplayer, where you're playing against other people online. Or you're using it as an entertainment device when you're connected to a service like Netflix or Xbox video, so that is an internet-connected device. In this phrase, it says 'must be internet-connected to use', you know, that suggests that you can't even boot into the UI and play—I don't know, I don't know, I don't have one.

"Originally, they were going to announce this thing in April 24, now they're going to announce it May 21. We know there are events occuring this year where we're going to learn more about Durango.

[And it's a fourth quarter release, right?]

"Early November, yeah. E3 is going to occur. BUILD is going to occur in San Francisco in June when they're going to talk about the developer story because it's a Windows 8 device. It's going to have the same, or basically the same, developer tools and developer APIs and all that kind of stuff. So I think there's a lot information to come, but I look at all this stuff that I've seen about Durango and I think, 'it's all positive.' I don't really see any bad news here at all. Like to me, everything I've seen about this is really positive. It's amazing to me that, based on like no information at all, everyone is like freaking out about everything. Aside from this online thing, by the way, the number one question I've gotten from people is, 'What does it look like?' Who gives a shit what it looks like?

"I've actually heard from, by the way not one or two people, several people who've said, 'based on what I've seen, Sony is going to blow them away.' Based on what you've seen? You've seen nothing. What are you talking about? No, but you've seen literally nothing from Microsoft.

[I don't think that's even a possibility considering how many people use Xbox Live... You're not going to have this mass Xbox audience jumping to Sony.]

"The problem Microsoft has has nothing to do with Sony or Nintendo anymore, it's Roku and AppleTV. The market for hardcore video games, the market of people will always buy the next Gears of War game, the next Halo game, the next Call of Duty game, it's fairly finite. It's a decent market, yada yada yada, it's not the market for tablets, it's not the market for smartphones.
