Yeah that seems ridiculous to me. If you buy a digital retro game on psn, You'd think they could keep that stuff compatible on ps4. I can understand current gen downloadable games not transferring over, but my FFVI-FFIX should not be an issue.

To be honest: the sooner they do this, the better. If they're really gunning for people's living rooms, they would do this now.

2) Out of the issues, some now dead in the backtracking filled gutter, how big is no BC to any of you? I have long since felt like we were lucky as hell to have it outside of Nintendo handhelds in the current scheme of things. I ask because I have friend that feels strongly about it, and it is the one thing that is keeping him from flipping back to the X Bro One side of things.

I actually don't care for backwards compatibility. I saw it coming. The architecture for both systems were going to change. Hardware backwards compatibility means more cost. Software backwards compatibility isn't always 100%. Microsoft would probably have an easier time of implementing it, but after how fast Sony dropped it last generation? Wouldn't be too keen on seeing it back.

See this is what I am thinking/hoping for as well. I mean that makes sense, but nothing about this year for MS leads me to believe that using common sense is high on that list. One can always hope, was hoping they had said something regarding this. Guess ill wait and see where it goes from here.

according to Kotaku (lol) the "offline mode" will be a day one patch, so people without internet will have to have internet to download a patch to not need the internet. I would assume they can include it on game discs to get around that, I know PS3 had system updates on some game discs, if memory serves.

I very seriously doubt it will come out from behind the paywall. I'm actually more curious to see what they add BEHIND they paywall. We all remember the XBL price going up because of all the "great new features" being added to it. I seriously think pay services will stay behind it, and I'm curious if they put the DVR, final fantasy football and other stuff behind it as well.

I wish it were there, but it's not a deal breaker. I agree that it feels like some gift to us that we've had it in the first place before. I still have all of my old system and most of my old games. I'll hook those up if necessary. Will really start to suck if we see coaxial jacks disappear on the back of TVs though. Nintendo's eShop and Gaikai will really important once that starts happening (if it starts happening).

If they drop the always on Kinect or allow for total opt out features of it I'm game. HDMI pass through that allows for an Xbox HUD while watching TV is sexy as hell.

I agree on both counts. For the latter, that was kind of what I tried to express to my brother in law, but he just couldn't grasp why it was more and more rare, and likely to just be gone now in most future systems. Would I like it? Well sure, sometimes, maybe, if it was done right. Am I at all surprised that it isn't there? No, not even slightly.

This will help them out a bit, but this still leaves them behind based on having an extra $100 tacked on to the price entirely because of a mandatory peripheral that a large amount of people don't even want.

It's unfortunate that BC is not available, but it makes sense - the more complicated systems get, the more difficult they are to emulate. I don't totally understand why the software emulation available on some PS3s isn't ported to PS4 so at least your PS1/2 library is playable, but I get why you can't play 360 on your 180 or PS3 on your PS4.

Developer bandwidth is limited, the scenario you describe would involve not only 'porting' the old software PS2 emu from PS3 -> PS4 you'd have to regress compatibility with every currently-supported PS2/PS1 title, something I guarantee you would not see a good ROI for Sony during the PS4 launch window. 360's software BC was a nice gesture but ultimately it didn't mean shit for the long-term success of the console. Going forward I expect to see Sony put more effort into streaming the gameplay to your console rather than develop and maintain an emulation scheme.
