I was watching netflix on mine yesterday (I don't have any games for it yet) and about 4 times during the movie it would come up "Listening" and it kept misreading normal hand gestures (like it I stretched my arms across the back of the couch, it thought I was reorienting the screen) not terribly annoying, but it sure mistakes quite a few things thinking you are talking to it. Though it was nice when the phone rang that I just said "xbox pause" instead of having to find the controller, wake up the controller, figure out what pauses it.

Not sure how many people know, but I just found out you can plug in any old micro usb cable into the controller to turn it into a wired controller.

Microsoft confirms account suspension for using unacceptable language

Users of Microsoft's Xbox One console caught swearing in video clips are having their accounts suspended.

Files containing "excessive profanity" will be taken down and their owners will have access to some features on Xbox Live removed.

Microsoft said all files uploaded to its Upload Studio were monitored for violations of its code of conduct.

The review process was to help maintain a clean, safe and fun environment for all users, the company said.

Direct peer-to-peer communications such as Skype chats and calls are not monitored by the Xbox Live enforcement team, according to Microsoft.

Xbox Live, which allows users to upload media files, including videos they have made, and take part in multiplayer games, was available on previous Microsoft consoles, but the company says the new Xbox One console has a more sophisticated system of enforcement.

"As a result, if someone misbehaves on the service, we may only suspend some of their privileges," said a Microsoft spokesperson.

The XBox One was launched in the UK and 12 other countries on 22 November.

Rumours of account suspensions first surfaced on gaming forums, with one user noticing they could not upload videos after previously posting one containing a "bad word."

Responses to the action taken by Microsoft were varied.

"I question the validity of this, but the average gamer is 32. I don't mind hearing someone saying it. Free speech," said one member.

Another thought some moderation was necessary: "Game uploads get sent to everyone. You see them when you browse a game etc. There has to be some control and moderation. Your private conversations are not censored or moderated. Only what you share with the public which includes little kids."

Users of rival console, Sony's PlayStation 4, may also experience a ban if they fail to adhere to the program's terms of service.

Twitch allows gamers to "broadcast, play and chat" using a live streaming service but after reports of people using the feature to show sexual content the company announced that any streams not about gaming or games would be moderated and turned off.

"Twitch has a very strict terms of service policy. We are very vigilant about removing content that breaks the TOS guidelines and depending on the severity of the violation we will either ban or suspend accounts," the company said in a statement given to the website Kotaku.

The service is already very popular via other platforms but the PlayStation 4 is the first console to integrate the Twitch broadcasting feature.

Users with broken disc drives will be given the choice of one free game

If there’s one constant of the universe, it’s that tech-launches have lots of problems. That’s been more or less proven true by the likes of Sony and Microsoft with their launches of the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, respectively. Both consoles have had their share of problematic units, and both are working to remedy those problems as quickly as possible. But it seems that Microsoft is going an extra step by giving customers with broken systems a free game for their troubles.

Microsoft has issued a statement promising a free digital download from one of Microsoft’s first-party titles for gamers who’d gotten consoles with busted disc drives. But offering up a digital copy, they can keep playing games while they wait for a working system:

While a replacement console is on its way, we want to ensure our advance exchange customers can stay in the game. We will provide each of them with a free digital download of one of the launch titles published by Microsoft Studios.

So what does that include? That’s Dead Rising 3, Forza Motorsport 5, Ryse: Son of Rome, and Zoo Tycoon.

Xbox One (offline, no update): 5 minutes 50 seconds
Xbox One (with update, fastest connection): 7 minutes 2 seconds
Xbox One (with update, 10Mbps connection): 10 minutes 32 seconds
PS4: 42 seconds

The rest of these were tested on our office Wi-Fi which is around 9-11Mbps. It may have been faster on a wired connection, but you can compare your own connection speed here. These are our results:

Sounds like the Xbone does close to a full install before letting you play it, while PS4 does the extreme bare minimum, letting you have access to either a limited portion of the game while it streams more data down, or installing what is needed as it comes up.

There's also the "feature" that Xbone installs are compatible with the digital copy, so you could for whatever reason, have a disc handle the install for you (borrowed/rented copy), and then purchase a digital license and be on your merryway without having to download anything besides patches, so perhaps that negatively affects the way the titles can be packaged for a 'install-while-you-play' system.

I want to see it down the road. My understanding was all of the first 6 months or so games were made with the DRM which put a single line of code saying the account could download, hence the massive install times/data.

Over 50 independent studios have received development kits as part of Microsoft’s Xbox One ID@Xbox program, Microsoft announced.

ID@Xbox allows small developers and large developers alike to self-publish their games on Xbox LIVE.

Games from these publishers should begin arriving early next year, according to Microsoft. Iron Galaxy has already confirmed it’s bringing, previously launched on PlayStation 3 and PS Vita, and announced as on the way for PlayStation 4, to Xbox One. And Vlambeer is bringing Nuclear Throne to Xbox One, too. But not until after a PlayStation 4 exclusivity period.

Xbox One consoles also double up as dev kits, and as such, each contain development menus buried beep below the standard interface. One gamer has posted a how-to guide on Reddit showing you how to gain access, but warns that the process could brick your console.

Reddit user Liam Hing posted his guide last night, and explained, “With a simple button combination in System you can enable developer settings, obviously you’ll most likely need to be a registered dev with ID@Xbox, but when they said it would happen they delivered.”

However, a confirmed Xbox One developer quickly replied, “Please don’t mess with anything here for the time being, especially the sandbox ID. You risk putting your box into a boot loop.” The claim was then backed up by a confirmed Epic Games developer.

When asked if Microsoft had a time-frame for ID@Xbox features being made available to the public, the XBox One developer replied, “I have no idea how far along the ID@Xbox program is. There are many concerns such as privacy, security, stability etc.., that need to be sorted out before we can allow anyone and everyone to simply sideload an app onto their box.”

A statement sent to Kotaku via Microsoft warns, “Changing the settings in this menu is only intended for developers for Xbox One, and this alone does not turn the console into a development kit. We strongly advise consumers against changing these settings as it could result in their Xbox One becoming unusable. Customers who have put their consoles into this developer setting can revert by restoring factory defaults under Settings / System, select Restore Factory Defaults.”

How does everyone like the console? Going to pull the trigger on one or the other in the coming weeks. My 2 brothers went to the dark side from xbox live but I still have few friends I played with that stuck with the one. I'd rather have the Xbox but it's going to come down to who I know that plays
