The conference itself wasn't that bad in my opinion, it's just that it's the internet and it's fun to complain and take pot shots when they do stupid things. It was on par with their previous E3 conferences and that had said going into it that it would be about the hardware and not games so I really didn't have an issue with the content they showed. Really the bad start coming when all the real information came out in the interviews afterwards. As far as always online, they can say it isn't, but for the most part it is. It has to check against the server daily to play your games. No, that's not as draconian as was originally thought, but that's still not great either. That also ignores the fact that they're allowing devs to make games require always-on and they hope they use it (which in turn means they'll probably use it on first party titles).
