People seem to forget too that there are people that trade in their games to *GASP* but a brand new copy when a new game comes out.

I don't think it would be out of line to suggest numerous below average income households where for xmas/bday/graduation/etc presents kids get a gift such as a game system but the parent(s) cannot afford the monthly cost of internet. I share a similar experience. Granted this was back in 1999, but I was about to graduate high school and my mother gave me as a present for both my birthday and graduation a N64. At the time we lived in a one bedroom apartment and didn't have much of anything. My mother knew how much I liked playing games and scrounged enough money to buy this present for me.

If MS would just say something along the lines of they're releasing a tv/internet device with (if the requirements are fulfilled) the option of playing a video game it could help them, although I doubt it.

It really just comes to again, Do we NEED a gaming console that HAS to have an internet connection to be able to function?

The answer is, no. Always, no.

It takes some serious stones, or a brain aneurysm to predict steam style pricing for the x1 online store. I'll believe it when Fable 4 goes for $13.59.

this. pachter spoke about how in reality there's less than a 5% gap in profits taking a ding from loss of sales that could even be claimed from used game sales because most games sold are going towards buying a new game that most likely wouldn't have been bought otherwise, as people don't have as much free cash currently in this economy.

It's ok if people have less cash, since there's going to be all these Steam sales going on.

Correct me if I'm wrong here but much of the time, the people I've seen trading in used games trade them in towards (other) used games, meaning developers/publishers see profit at no point in this cycle, and you can usually find a used copy of a new game within a week of it hitting shelves new. These 'new games' being bought as a result of a trade in might as well not even exist in the eyes of the dev/publisher.

Gamestop's president recently stated that 70% of all trade in dollars go towards new game purchases. The trade-in, used game cycles helps new games to some degree, although I'm willing to allow some wiggle room about the types of games it helps and for the notion that Gamestop executives are slopping the numbers a little to overstate their position in the market.

If the system's entire catalogue is truly available for digital download, I believe you will see a significant impact on sell and resell of used games. I for one am guilty of paying full price for an older title, Infamous comes to mind, when I could have made a 5 minute bike ride to the mall to grab it for half if not less. MS extra measures are so over the top and unnecessary.

I also believe there is a direct link between shitty developed games and used game sales. If a game is released that I feel is a day one or week one buy, I'm buying a brand new copy. Saving a buck 99 for a used copy without the perks makes very little sense to me. If a game is shitty/unpopular/not well received/got trashy user reviews but I'd like to try it anyway, I'm copping it used. If it far exceeds my expectation I would buy the sequel day one/week one.

    Yeah, you're definitely wrong there.

There's a reason the vast majority of gamestop "specials" are "x% extra if you trade in towards Y new game."

only time I trade in games to get used games is when there's a lull in new releases and I want to scoop up some 10 dollar old ones for my backlog. about 85% of my trading (which is pretty considerable) goes towards new games, which eventually become more credit towards new games, and so on and so forth

At this point I've stopped trading in games because of the poor returns. I'd rather list them on eBay and actually get a few bucks, get credit in my paypal acct, turn around and buy the new game I'm interested online. I couldn't tell you the last time I was in a Gamestop. I got tired of getting ripped off.

I can buy tons of games for $5-15 on steam that are equal quality, or better than a console game. Not having used games, and not having steam-like sales is "HI WE WANT ALL YOUR MONEY". Funny part is, they'd make more money having steam-like sales with huge price drops and discounts durning holidays and summer etc. Valve has said that the devs make more money off 50-75% off sales than when the games are full price. This should tell you something, why don't consoles notice this?

A $500 is also hilarious considering what else I can get for $500 , you can get a decent PC that can play games for a few years for $500, and do more than the xbox one can. I rarely ever buy used games because I like my games brand new, but you have to admit that the price of games is way to hiigh, especially for most people. I'm sure tons of people dabbed into franchises they normally wouldn't because $60 is a lot of money to "try" something, then they see it used for $10-15, buy it, love it, and buy the next games in that series NEW.

The price is insane and microsoft are insane + retarded.

I don't interact with Gamestop much anymore. I've heard stories of someone going in with an early generation Reverse Compatible PS3 and they offered like $25-$50 for it.

The writer of that article is smoking something if they think a company will lower prices of games because they're making more profit. Mind you, I have no background in economics or business at all, but companies don't cut their own profit margins because "we've made so much already, we'll lower prices to make it less".

    Edit:
    A little question:
If Microsoft had built in an HD PVR would that effect anyones opinion on buying this?
When I had cable, I was paying nearly $25 a month for their HD PVR. I would easily entertain replacing it with an XOne it had one build in. It'd pay for itself in a year or two if that were the case.

More details about how the used game thing will (possibly?) work:

The Xbox One will support the used games market, but how this will happen and who stands to benefit has been a topic of much discussion this week. As Microsoft continues to allow speculation to run rampant, MCV has gotten in touch with UK retail sources who explained a plausible scenario of how the system will work.

A customer walks into a reseller with a previously purchased game disc. This can only be done at retailers that, according to MCV, have "agreed to Microsoft's [terms and conditions] and more importantly integrated Microsoft's cloud-based Azure pre-owned system into its own." The game disc, having been registered in the system, now wipes the license use from the previous owner's account so that the installed game on their Xbox One can no longer be accessed.

Here's the delicate part: the publisher and Microsoft will now receive a cut from the sale. Previously, a company like GameStop pocketed 100 percent of the used game sale, now ConsoleDeals.co.uk is reporting it could be significantly less if Microsoft has oversight of the market. The pre-owned market would go on, but its glorious margins to retailers would be destroyed. Meanwhile, publishers would finally get what they've always dreamed of: a piece of that pie.
    http://www.joystiq.com/2013/05/24/re...e-owned-sales/

All I'm reading is Microsoft and the PUBLISHER (NOT the developer) will get 90% of the profit from used game sales. This is basically a dagger in the heart for Gamestop since I think most of their revenue came from used sales. I seriously wish that every single retailer would just say FU and refuse to carry anything related to the XO. As for Sony: this is their moment. All they have to do is come out and publicly state that used games on the PS4 will be as its always been, and they'll win this generation.

How many more generations of consoles do you think we'll see?

I'm thinking Gen5 will be the last console generation, but we'll see what the future brings I guess.
